I asked a few games ago and no one answered: Why is 100 pitches the "magic number" for pulling a starter out of a game?
My almost old-school self says it's BS, but new fangled managing is all about 1) keeping guys healthy (which I don't think can possibly be ensured) and 2) number of times a lineup sees a guy. My guess, anyway. Health/stamina over a season is probably the biggest issue, though.

Garcia damn sure did his job tonight.

I understand there has to be some limit, my question is why is it 100 pitches? It seems like it would vary player by player. Like now Garcia is on a roll. Will throwing 110 pitches be any different than throwing 100?

Tough 3rd with the error but hell of a game from Garcia. Offense better score for this bullpen.

Except for the 3rd, Garcia pitched a heckuva game tonight.

Need some runs this half-inning to get the kid a W.

I imagine loads of analytical data has told baseball teams around 100 pitches, especially if taxed, is where pitchers risk of injury increases, or at least makes the modern pitcher more prone to fatigue later in the season.

I don't think they do it just for fun.

That is really the best guess...there has to be some statistic that 100 pitches is where guys start to lose control/velocity in a game.

My recollection (often questionable) is that 100 is a "new school" idea. I recall some of the guys like Ryan, Drysdale, Marichal, etc. would regularly throw 120-130 a game. I have no data to support my memory.

Yes obviously there is something. I was just wondering if someone knew specifically what it was. I don't think anyone's dumb enough to think they were just doing it for fun.
