Mike Scott recaptured his winning form 1985 for the first time in 1986, pitching 8- innings and striking out nine as the Astros ran their road win streak to three and took over first place for the first time. They would be in first place for 135 days total in 1986, although they wouldn't take over the spot for good until July 19.
Scott was backed up by the incredibly torrid bat of Phil Garner, who went 2-for-4 and hit a first-inning home run off Mario Soto to get the Astros on the board first. Down 2-1 in the top of the fourth, the Astros tied things up when Kevin Bass scored on a Bo Diaz passed bal, and Alan Ashby followed with a two-run jack. They made it 5-2 in the fifth when Glenn Davis scored Bill Doran on a sacrifice fly and Terry Puhl scored on a throwing error by Reds' center fielder Eric Davis. Walling added a solo home run in the top of the sixth. Nick Esasky hit a two-run homer with 1 out in the ninth to cut the lead to 6-4, so Dave Smith came in to get the last two outs and preserve the win.
