so the question...how much money did George lose by the Astros delaying his call-up by 1 month in 2014?

George signs at age 31 for 6 years $125 MM.

if he hits FA after the 2019 season (and before COVID)...

he probably signs at age 30 for 7 years $200 MM (somewhere in America) I would guess.

so, yeah, he probably lost around $80 MM

And he can rightfully blame the players union and their protection of older players at the expense of younger ones.

I'm hoping we at least offered the same deal and made him a great offer.

No chance we offered anything near that.

No way we offered the same deal.

I think he would have still gone to Toronto. But it would be nice to know Click is at least willing to spend big money.

Click was very quiet on the Springer front

If we ignore the salary reduction due to Covid. He would have made 21 M last year. He signed for 6 years 150 M.

If you're saying he would have gotten 7 years, 200 M then the year cost him 29 M. It's bad, but it's not as bad as I expected.

That's not smart though.

$25mm for George 5 and 6 years from now is CRAZY risky.

If you offer it out of goodwill and he accepts it then we're stuck with that for 6 years.

Yeah he worth it now and for the next year or two but by the end of that contract he's our new Josh Reddick.

The Mets # is kind of what I was expecting.

I am still holding out a tiny tiny bit of hope for Brantley.

Hope we can get Brantley back on a cheap deal or sign Ozuna

No thanks....offense isn't mind blowing.

I'd rather they just sign Marisnick for the defense and then get Brantley or Ozuna

If we weren't willing to pay for George, no way we're willing to pay for Ozuna.

Blue Jays at Minute Maid Park...Mother's Day weekend.

it will be a 25% standing ovation --- that's a shame

I'm not so sure. If we can get a cheap option like Marisnick in center field for additional defense, I think that Ozuna may be a good target. He made $18M last year, noticeably less than Springer and he's not going to command a contract like Springer. It'll be lower years and lower annual value, and probably worth the risk if the Stros can swing it. Kind of depends on whether he's able to play left field reliably instead of DH.

Our lineup would be pretty stacked even without George.

What's Nick Banks up to? He always struck me as a very poor mans George Springer.

So back to the overall FA market.

COVID my ass!

Trienen then Hendricks and now George.

Top end talent is still getting paid.

I'm betting Ozuna holds out a bit. I was reading an article today about there still being uncertainly about the NL DH. It's still not dead. If that's for real Ozuna will find a job as a DH for more than we would pay him.

Average minor league player back in 2019 when minors were still a thing. He'll be 26 this year with no AAA experience yet.

Unless we start Leon in AAA (we won't)

Banks should begin 2021 in AAA for the Nationals, but he will be blocked for a long time by Juan Soto.

By the way, did you know that Soto was only 21 when he played against us in the World Series?!

So let's circle back to Brantley. Kind of thinking out loud here.

He's going to be 34 for the 2021 season. At 32 he only got 2/32 M. He's been healthy and playing well since but he's still 34. He was not given the QO (~19 M). Spotrac has his market value at 3/64 (21.3 ea). I think that high based on the lack of an QO. My best guess is he'll get somewhere around 2/34 or 3/43. With DH being taken with Yordan, I am it sure we're going to invest in a guy who'll get paid in the teens for year 35 and possibly 36 who may end up a minus LF who needs a lot of rest and time at DH.

I think our best option is a combo of JBJ, Joc, & someone to platoon with Joc.

The off-season is absolutely killing the city this year. Granted I don't really care about the NBA, but its insane that each sport seems to be losing their key star this year

Looking at the future a bit...what players will Houston attempt to keep long term? Tucker? Probably. Yordan? Not if he doesn't stay healthy. They better pay Carlos and keep him. Otherwise it's just Altuve and Bregman.

Nobody. Constant rotation of team leader like Oakland. Milking players while they are youthful and cheap and never committing to players no matter how much they do for us or want to be here.

This is the current Astros.

Unless you let him walk. Move Bregman to SS. Then pay Arenado or Bryant.

I would have had no problem with Astros offering the same. Even if he hits a wall in 3 years, that kind of experience and leadership in the fall is worth it. Reduced playing time during the regular season would help him stay fresh come fall.

And for at least one season the taxes may not eat him up if Toronto plays in the US this year. But after that, yikes.
