Lou Brock, who played nearly 20 seasons in the majors the majority with the St. Louis Cardinals has passed away on Sunday afternoon, per the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Brock finished his baseball career with over 3,000 hits and was a shoe-in for the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. On the diamond, there are few who could compete with this six-time All-Star.

Greatest base stealer until Rickey Henderson came along. Member of the 3000 hit club. RIP.

The essential Chicago Cubs terrible trade.

June 15, 1964: Traded by the Chicago Cubs with Jack Spring and Paul Toth to the St. Louis Cardinals for Ernie Broglio, Doug Clemens and Bobby Shantz.

Broglio had been a 21-game winner and had gone 18-8 in 1963.
He went 7-19 in 2-1/2 seasons for the Cubs and was out of baseball before his 31st birthday.

Clemens hits .279 in 1/3rd of a season for the Cubs, then fell off to .221 the next year. He was gone in a trade to the Phillies a year after.

Shantz was already 38 years old and went 0-1 with a 5.56 ERA. They sold his contract to the Phillies 2 months later.

Brock led the NL in stolen bases for 8 of the next 9 seasons, including 118 when he was 35, which seems physically impossible. Six seasons of 100 runs, 3 seasons of 200 hits, 4 seasons of at least 10 triples.

After the trade he hit .348 for the Cardinals and hit .300 as they won the World Series. In the '67 WS, he hit .414 as the Cardinals beat the Red Sox. In the 1968 WS, which they lost to Detroit, he hit .464.

In 21 WS games (no league playoffs back then), he hit .391, slugged .655 and had an OBP of .424. In the 67 and 68 WS, he had 7 stolen bases per series.

I looked forward to tracking his games everyday in the morning newspaper box score. I would look for his SB's the same way we might look for HR's today.

RIP Lou.

looking at some of Lou Brock's history...

as expected he was a first ballot Hall of Famer, but only on 79% of the ballots. That seems kind of strange (and low).

when he was inducted in 1985, he was the all-time stolen base leader; with a .293 career BA.

and he was 1 of only about 15 players who were in the 3,000 hit club at the time. And an aforementioned world series star.

(Hoyt Willhelm was the only other player elected in 1985 at 83%)

The baseball writers are historic ******bags when it comes to electing guys to the HOF and what percentage of votes they get. Definitely not interested in this turning into black vs. white, but prior to Brock, only five other players who were strictly African-American (not Dominican, etc.) had been voted in and some if not most of their percentages are pretty eye-raising.

Ernie Banks was first with 83.8%.
Willie Mays was second with 94.7% - are you kidding me? How did 5% of the writers not think Willie Mays should be in the Hall?
Bob Gibson was third with 84%.
Hank Aaron was fourth with 97.8% - again, WTF - he was only the all-time leader in RBI and homers.
Frank Robinson was fifth with 89.2% of the vote - Guy was fourth all-time in home runs forever and won a triple crown and MVPs in both leagues.
Brock was sixth with 79.7% of the vote.
Willie McCovey was sixth with 81.4% of the vote.

Willie McCovey at only 81% is surprising too. He is a member of the 500-HR club.

and at the time of his retirement was 9th or 10th on the all-time HR list

there may have been some bias against midwest players --- guys that never played in the big media markets on the east coast or in Los Angeles.

Banks, Brock, Gibson would fit that criteria. Stargell only got 82%.

----
I looked up Yastrzemski --- a peer of the players we're discussing. He got 94%. Yaz was a great player. I had expected to see him in the 88% to 90% range

Banks, Brock, Gibson, McCovey are black. That's where the issue is.

withholding HOF votes because of race is a bold claim. theres no way those northeastern sportswriters would ever do that.
