Another cheapskate move by McMullen, not signing Cruz for one more year so he could finish up as an Astro. he went to the Yankees his last year and hit a grand slam one Saturday on the national game of the week.
Not to defend McMullen, but Cruz was 40, had nothing left in the tank and couldn't DH for us back in those days. He signed with the Yankees on a one-year contract for about the league average. McMullen made a lot of indefensible cheapskate moves, but the window with the 86 core was still open and I don't think anyone owes it to a player (even Cruz) to sign him for one more year at age 40 for the league average to be a pinch-hitter.
