At first blush, I really like this move for them. Seems like someone Jeff would do. Maybe we would have been in on it if not for the payroll issue.

Disagree. It's a nice buy low and they have an out next year if he doesn't meet expectations.

They have the money and it's short term without costing prospect capital. Basically keeps them from being in the dump in the new stadium. Some teams actually value not being complete 2011 Astros dog****.
You could say that about them no matter who they sign. Unless they added So etching like Cole, Rendon, & Grandel they aren't really competing for much this year.

So Zona effectively swapped Grienke for MadBum at a way lower cost and got 4 extra players in the deal. They played that very very well.
But they are paying half of Grienke's salary, so basically a wash money wise. But did pick up 4 extra prospects.

Agreed. Given his career credentials and notches on his postseason belt, it's telling that he wasn't able to land a nine figure deal in this red hot market. Like you said, advanced stats and forward looking projections don't look as strong.
