He outplayed Lunhow on CFM

Click: Hey skip
Dusty: Hey boss! What's up?
Click: I was thinking about grooming some guys to be openers this year. Any candidates in mind?
Dusty: Definitely. I think Verlander and Grienke will be very good starters.
Click: Yes, Verlander and Grienke are very good starters, but they aren't openers
Dusty: <blank face>
Click: Like, I'm looking for guys who could pitch one inning to start the game, then transition to a long relief guy
Dusty: Why? Wouldn't it be better to have the starter pitch more innings?
Click: It's a different strategy
Dusty: So you don't think Verlander and Grienke are good starters?
Click: Of course. But I'm looking for openers to pitch one inning
Dusty: I've watched a lot of baseball and that doesn't make sense. You need starters and relievers and maybe a closer.
Click: <facepalm>

Good hire but let's not adopt that goofy 1 inning starter stuff.

But it doesn't. The theory is sound, but their openers got rocked (last I checked). If someone has better stats, I'd love to see them.

No the 1 inning stuff is baseball nerds gone wrong, the Astros and vast majority of teams do not have bullpens for that, even more so with the new rules.

Seemed to really give us fits in the ALDS.

I think teams who embrace it and build with it in mind it works for. Doesn't work for teams like us that try it randomly here and there.

Was talking with a co worker today and he made a good point about Dusty and being old school.... hopefully we will see more hit and runs, bunts, etc. I enjoy that kind of baseball even though the numbers may not agree

The rays had a great bullpen. Them and 3 other teams could adopt the 1 inning starter system, and the rest of the league has way too few arms for that.

Adopting more hit and run could produce better at bats if nothing else. Especially seems logical approach when the low strikeout hitters are up ( Brantley, Yuli).

Especially if they know a fastball is coming. Surely we can figure out another way to communicate that.

I suspect if bunting and hit and running were productive we would have been doing it.

I love Carrabis:

Interesting. Just very, very interesting that only the Red Sox and Astros have been named in all of this sign-stealing stuff. It's almost like I've been a thousand percent right all along.

Right about what, you ask? Oh, just that I've been shouting from the rooftops that the only reason why the Astros and Red Sox were the only two teams to be named in all of this is because Evan Drellich only ever worked in Houston and Boston and had an ax to grind against both organizations. Also have been saying that if Drellich worked in the Bronx and LA before going to the Athletic that the two sign-stealing stories would've been about the Yankees and Dodgers.

Why? Because THEY. WERE. DOING. IT. TOO. Tell the whole ****ing story! Investigate all of the teams that were rumored to be doing it. There are plenty of them. And they're all just sitting there laughing at the Astros and Red Sox because they KNOW that the league won't investigate any other teams unless another story is written by a reputable publication. Why? Because the league would LOVE to contain the cheating epidemic to just two teams. It's a bad look if it's more than that. Well, it IS more than that. Yet, the only way that other teams will be investigated is if there's another story written somewhere.

Well, Chris Young, who played for both the Red Sox and Yankees, just gave you your story. The Red Sox were fined for using Apple watches to relay signs to the dugout from the video room in 2017. That was strike one. That's why, if the league finds anything on them for 2018, their punishment will be harsh, because they already have a strike against them. Well, how about the league getting off of their collective ****ing asses and looking at the Yankees for once. I mean, Jesus Christ. How many times do I have to write out this sentence on the blog the New York Yankees were named SEVENTY-ONE ****ING TIMES IN THE ATHLETIC STORY THAT ACCUSED THE RED SOX OF CHEATING. SEVENTY-ONE.

I have no problem with the occasional hit an run, keeps opponent a little off balanced, kind of like the occasional steal.
But bunting, literally 90% of the league has no idea how to bunt properly.

I absolutely love the hit and run too

Remember Altuve hitting a beauty ground ball through the hole in World series to set up runners on the corners

I wonder what analytics really suggest about hit and runs, I feel like if you have the correct hitter up, it is a savvy play a lot of the time

Definitely agree with this. We were doomed to fail with the approach last year because we didn't prep guys for the roles, but Tampa's guys sure looked comfortable in their roles when the playoffs rolled around.

If we had our 2018 rotation, there would be no need to experiment with openers. But given our current personnel, I don't think it's a bad idea to try out a few guys in opener/long relief specialist roles.

As of right now, JV and Grienke are the only two guys we'll be able to lean on for 200 innings this year. Maybe LMJ but his career high for innings in a season is 128 and he'll be monitored closely. That leaves alot of innings to be managed.

The good news is I think we have a surplus of pitchers with good stuff who don't seem to fit cleanly into the traditional starter or late inning reliever role. Abreu, Martes, James, Pruitt, Valdez, Perez, even Peacock all seem like interesting candidates for an unconventional Rays-like role.

But like you said, if we're going to go down that path, the grooming process needs to start during spring training.

Yahoo just posted a horse **** article where the columnist claims the Address didn't "deserve" to hire Click. And that the hiring is "unfair" because it's not in the "spirit of the punishment."

I'm not going to post it because the guy doesn't "deserve" clicks.

The MSM is still continuing the Astros hating narrative. Yet, we still wait for the Red Sox penalty and other investigations. I don't think MLB will do jack.
