Also, the Mariners are 13-6, and the Asstros are 11-5. Add that the Ray's (not favored) have bolted out to a 12-4 record. There are just too many teams the Rangers have to compete with for maybe the 2nd wildcard to make this move this year.

We scored 12 runs last night and had to use our closer. The first 6 guys in the lineup last night have over .900 OPS, and we're at .500. This team has been fun to watch, and will likely continue to provide excitement, but they are one hitting blink away from losing 15 out of 20. Best case scenario, you sign Keuchel and find a way to win 90 games. Most likely scenario - you sign Keuchel and a 75 win team becomes an 80 win team. If this team is somehow 10 games over .500 at the ASB, then you can make a move. There will always be sellers.

So, several things.

I agree Keuchel is worth looking at, but not until after the June draft, when it won't cost us a draft pick.

Regarding competing this year... nobody expects Seattle to continue to lead the division.

The AL East is interesting. NY has a ton of injuries, Boston has floundered and Tampa is off to a hot start.

My concern is not just getting some SPs to have an impact, but to find someone that can get past the 5th or 6th inning. If we continue to use RPs for 5-6 IP, our RP will break down.

I don't know that all of them will be part of the future, but they could all be part of 2020 and beyond, for little cost.

Smyly ($7M) and Miller ($2M) are low cost. Remember Smyly was a pickup to get the Cubs to take Hamels' option for 2019, which was a wash financially for the Rangers. IIRC, the buyout for Hamels was about $7M, which the Rangers were on the hook for, if the Cubs didn't pick him up. Rangers took Smyly which freed up $7M, which got the Cubs to pickup Hamels.

I could see the Rangers going with a Starter, for Smyly or Miller, and using them in long-relief. I just don't know that he'd go for it. Seems like JD had said with some of the retreads (my word) that they were veteran SPs and coming in and warming up out of the BP would not be natural for them. I would think if you had someone like Dowdy come in and pitch only 1.0 inning... essentially telling Smyly regardless of what Dowdy does, he'll be coming in the 2nd inning, how that wouldn't allow him to get a routine. It would beat being cut, I would think.

When do the guys in AAA warrant a callup? Maybe when Smyly or Miller find a blister for a IL stay? 3rd time through the rotation... maybe after 6 GS?

Does MLB or MLBPA prevent sign and trades? E.g. Astros sign Keuchal to a Rangers-approved one-year deal, and then trade him to Rangers for some lotto ticket prospect not worth a first rounder in the draft.

Was that Cliff Lee? They're calling that a 4 seam fastball, but it looks just like a cutter. If he can control that pitch, it is nasty. He walked the leadoff hitter, but then realized he could start that cutter 4 inches off the plate against righties, and the hitters have to cover a 25" plate.
