Braves in 98 should get even more credit based on when they did that.

Why is the 03 Yankees listed?

What about the 2011 phillies
Agnzona
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Well they did benefit from a 3 inch wider plate than the rest of baseball.

I wanted one more contemporary, and those where big historic pitchers.

You could easily swap the Phillies with that Yankee team.

That Yankees rotation was pretty salty. I don't know where they sit all time, but sometimes it's hard to believe just how blown to shreds ERAs were in that period.

So you're saying Clemens ERA was higher than it should have been because hitters were roiding?

Where does the 05 Astros rotation stand. That's be an interesting comparison.

Clemens
Petite
Oswalt
Backe
Rodriguez

Brandon Backe and Wandy Rodriguez were obviously the weak links but the top 3 all had ERAs under 3 and Roger having an ERA under 2. Not to mention Backe was a stud in the playoffs.

They carried that team to the WS.

Actually 6 inches...at least for Maddux.

Yeah yeah.

It was really just a commentary on how skewed ERAs were in that 1994-2004ish decade, and I think some very good, if not great, rotations get overlooked in that period because of the raw numbers.

I think you can argue other rotations in that period were as good or better than that Yankees team.

The top 3 of that 2005 Astros rotation was damn impressive. Rodriguez, Backe, and Astacio were **** but the top 3 were incredible.

Not all timers but the 1969 Astros broke the NL record for K's by a staff by 98 K's. Record stood for 27 years. Grizzled veteran Larry Dierker was 22 years old and in his 6th Major League season. He threw 20 complete games.

Look at the Oakland As in 1970s. Hunter and Blue were mainstays, but they had other real good starters. And Fingers out of the bullpen.
Agnzona
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Bullpeans can certianly skew the starters numbers both ways. That Yankees staff their best pitcher was not a starter.

I'd also throw in another older team. Dodgers in mid 60s were pretty awesome. Koufax and Drysdale were unhittable. Plus they had other good arms.

The main point is looking at these historic staffs and realize how deep the Astros is, is amazing.

I'd go with the 1975 or 1976 Cincinnati Reds pitching staff.

with that lineup...it didn't matter who was on the mound. The Reds were going to win

the 1978 Yankees staff was a good one.

that was Ron Guidry's phenomenal season: 35 starts, 25-3 record with 1.74 ERA.

Ed Figueroa: 35 starts, 20-9 record with 2.99 ERA.

the staff also had Catfish Hunter (on the downside) and Don Gullet

and the 1973 Mets with Seaver, Koosman, and Matlock and a guy named George Stone.

all 4 had ERA's between 2.08 (Seaver) and 3.20 (Matlock)

Quote:

Dodgers 1966 Osteen 2.85 38 17 14
Anyone else remember him? The Astros had so many disastrous trades in the 60/70s that the one with him is pretty far down on the list, but it was bad.

When he played for the Dodgers he was an absolute Astros killer. They could never touch him. Then the Astros traded away Jimmy Wynn for him, and while Osteen didn't do much for the Astros, Wynn had a monster season for LA the next year and helped them win the division.

That '54 Cleveland staff really was epic, in the World Series that year Bob Feller didn't even get a start. But they got swept anyway.

They've been good, but not dominant. Price is their third best pitcher and is basically equivalent to Keuchel (our fifth pitcher).

The last two games stretch is starting to mirrow the Deshaises, Ryan, Scott 3 game stretch against the Giants.

I'd love one of these guys to pitch a no-no and watch how hard the others try to match it....
