It's not one game. It's a season and a half of struggles on the mound.

And that's your bias showing. Giles is an above average closer. He has two blown saves, given up a run in 8 of his 30 appearances (11 total in 28.1 IP), and 4 of those were in quite low-leverage situations.

Yes. He has performed quite well against good teams and in high leverage situations. He's an above average closer. He's not Kimbrel, but very very few are...

He needs to be mentally sharp and he just isn't coming in in the middle of an innining or in a 4-run game. Hinch's should know this and how to use him in the playoffs.

I just think it's ridiculous to say we might as well give up now because our closer has a sub-3.5 ERA. Especially since there's no one to replace him with.

Stats definitely are much better than I thought. But they also don't take into account how many jams he gets himself into. For instance, tonight he gave up only 1 run, but was also 1 swing of the bat away from giving up 5 runs and losing the game.

I completely agree that realistically, there's no outside option for an upgrade at closer. There's no unicorn out there waiting for Hinch/Luhnow to throw Giles to the curb so they can take the mound and never give up a run. But it's frustrating seeing him struggle so often with command.
