I've turned on ESPN several times this morning because mlb network has been on rerun and not once have they discussed the WS. Outside the Lines started with their "big story" Zeke Elliot's suspension.
I listened to the around the horn segment yesterday. If anyone is in the mood to get all pissed off, watch the part where they are talking about game 5. I kid you not, the entire panel talked about how LA lost the game and gave absolutely zero credit to the Astros. Tony Reali took points away from everyone because nobody gave the Astros credit and they STILL didn't give us an ounce of love. THEN they proceeded to talk about how ridiculous is was the Yuli was not suspended for the World Series. I mean my god that network has become pure and utter trash.
God....please let Yuli win the MVP. Please.....

I seriously don't understand people who watch ESPN and get upset over lack of coverage for X team/player/sport.

"It's really strange," he said. "A lot of the action is coming from a big bettor all over town and all the bookmakers are talking about it."

"You mean the mattress king," I asked.

"Well, I can't really speculate, but"

Mattress Mack really is spreading cash all over town and, every time the books get some Dodgers money to balance out their rolls, it seems he's coming in and making the line go cuckoo.

But wait. As I was recording with Scooch, Darren Rovell of ESPN fame texted me with a link that read, "Here's something for your newsletter."

I clicked, and it was this gem from Rovell and ESPN's David Purdum, reporting that ticket brokers are unloading on the Astros, to hedge against any potential Game 7 losses. In total, they wrote, "there is more than $20 million in profits on the line in Game 6." Johnny Avello, bookmaker at The Wynn, said in the story that brokers have been betting $200,000-$300,000 on past games in the series. "And that's just me," he said. "I assume they are spreading it all over town."

So, aside from the game-clinching storylines, you have a whole lot of hedges to talk about with your friends. And, for the record, Scooch also noted that the bettors have been on the right side of every game so far in this series. And, tonight, they are on the Astros and ace Justin Verlander.

My buddy was in line behind Mattress Mack in one of the sports books in Vegas last Thursday (after game 2). He snapped a picture of Mack at the betting counter carrying a backpack. I couldn't believe that he doesn't solely use insurance to hedge. I guess he actually was betting on the games.

Specialty insurance is going to be under-written at a huge premium, as there is no pool over which to spread risk and outcomes. Casinos will be the more efficient method, as they are balancing risk by moving the lines and have much more information than an insurance underwriter will. Under the right circumstances, you can leverage with betting more efficiently than with insurance.

Now though? Unlikely. I think these are just real bets he is making. The ticket brokers are the real hedges.

Futures bets at the Casino when we were opening the season at 12-to-1 (+1200) would have been cheaper than any insurance policy he could buy. Even the 9-to-2 (+450) odds at the start of the playoffs might have been better than insurance. Not now though.

Anything hedging this promotion is via specialty insurance. He wouldn't be making Vegas bets (futures or otherwise) to hedge the promotion because of the tax implications. Any money he is laying down is his own personal bets.

Not sure if this has been posted, but some of the back and forth between the NASA JPL (in Pasadena) and the JSC has been pretty good.

Honestly at this point, I don't want to jack around with the roster, especially in the field. Also, doesn't Reddick do statistically well against lefties? Just my personal opinion.

Did anyone else hear Bregman talk about his walk off hit. Fantastic baseball mind. Said Kelsey threw the slider the night before and he hit it out, knew he wouldn't see the slider again, geared up for the cutter that he pitched and drove it. Knew it was coming.

That's why I fell really good about tonight - the more our top 5 have see a pitcher the more they rake. True for all of baseball but more so for our guys. And our top are the best top 5 in baseball.

So what happens if they lose...hypothetically speaking of course.

He keeps his $10mm from sales and loses it on the bet, this a net zero?

I do t know the details but I'm sure he's figured it it he's on top. Even if it is net zero for him a lot of people around him made out well. He's turning inventory, he's getting suppliers paid, he's building a customer base, etc.

I was listening to MLB Radio on Sirius yesterday and they got into that discussion again. Can't remember the show or the hosts, but one of the guys was in the "suspend him for 1 WS game" camp while the other was in the "he shouldn't be suspended at all" camp. His reasoning was pretty solid. It was that it took place in the dugout with his teammates, and wasn't directed toward Yu or in public. He stated that if MLB starts suspending players for what goes on in the dugout during a game, then there wouldn't be a team to field.

Oh, and limit the walks. 12 of LA's 30 runs have gotten on via the walk. For the good guys, it's 4 of 28.
That's insane that nearly 50% of their runs we have not made them work for. Yup, attack the zone - I'd rather get beat with hits than with walks.
I've always wondered about how much a manager "coaches or talks to a player/team" before a game at the Major League level.

Does he sit down with Verlander and tell him....."look JV the walks have been killing us this series ..... DONT WALK ANYONE"

Do they sit down with the batters and say......"look guys we need to be patient and work this pitcher....just put the bat on the ball and put it in play"

OR do they just assume these guys already know all this stuff and keep their mouths shut?????
I've thought about this as well from time to time.

I think the following is pretty accurate:

1. Pitching coach probably goes over strategy with the pitchers/catchers on how to approach a lineup.

2. Probably go over defensive shifts (Altuve has been seen a couple of times checking his play card in his hat before a specific batter came up)

3. Batting coach probably watches film on pitchers and his own batters and tries to figure out where certain pitchers like to go on what counts and what has worked on his own hitters.

4. They showed the Dodgers manager get a big huddle in the dugout in Game 3 or 4 and do a "Dodgers on 3" little cheer so I think they probably do some rah rah at times.

For the most part, especially watching AJ Hinch who seems to be the calmest manager in baseball, they let their guys do their thing and don't try to screw with their rhythm. He doesn't seem to ever be talking to the players unless he's pulling a pitcher or checking with the player before a challenge. Baseball players are funny in that they have their own superstitions and routines that managers probably don't want to screw with.

Not to rehash the Yuli stuff, but MLB is a multi-cultural sport with players from around the world. You cannot expect guys from other cultures to immediately assimilate into the overly PC culture of the US unless there are league mandated training courses to help them do so.

I think this would have been a perfect opportunity for the league to stand up and say, "We have failed our international players by not making it known what is expected of them as members of our league. We realize that there are cultural differences around the world and we need to educate our players on what is acceptable behavior and how to best serve as role models for the millions of American youths that look up to them." Or something along those lines.

You cannot just expect a player to figure out on his own that we live in an ultra-sensitive society here in the US and that people will get butthurt over the most innocent of actions that take place in the dugout, are directly only towards teammates, and just happen to get caught on camera.

As part of this training, it should be noted that shouting profanities and showing visible signs of frustration (e.g. throwing equipment or attacking water dispensing devices) is acceptable behavior, so long as such profanities or actions are not deemed racist or offensive by any subset of American culture.

Sorry for that. Rant over. Beat LA!

Exactly this. Those that are complaining clearly have never been anywhere near baseball (or any organized sport) at a level higher than little league.

NASA JPL is just a sideshow with a bunch of dweebs who can't handle the stress of manned spaceflight, so all they work on are unmanned probes.

Everything in NASA routes through JSC at some point, and we're the ones who built and maintain the International Space Station. Plus that whole thing in the 60s and early 70s when we put 12 men on the moon using less processing power than a TI-83.

I saw that too and thought it was pretty weak and silently chuckled to myself. I've never seen that happen in MLB baseball.

I think AJ talks quite a bit to the players. Often times I've noticed him talking with Verlander or Keuchel on their off nights while standing there looking at his spreadsheets. Seems like he talks with the guys in the hole as they wait on the steps before getting on deck. I also remember at one point this season McCann was sitting there in AJ's spot with the data all in front of him like he was the one driving the bus.

In my opinion I think AJ interacts with his players more than the average manager. It may not be super in depth conversations about particular strategy that may cause confusion and I imagine it's more overall thought process and game knowledge, but I do think AJ is very good at communicating with his players and sharing knowledge.

True... I was just trying to simplify things for the non-degenerate gamblers on the thread. But yes... if he timed his wagers right he could have very much hedged and all but guaranteed a profit for himself.

I'd be OK with pitching Gregerson only if we have at least a 3 run lead.

I don't want him pitching in a 2 run game where a walk and a bomb can tie it up.

3 runs or more and I'm fine with it

If we have a three run lead, the only pitchers who I want to have the ball are either Verlander or Lance.
