I don't think Singleton is trying anymore. Dude is almost Prince Fielder size at this point...

Breg really needs to be in ST. I hate to say that, but as an Astros fan, it's what's best.

Not everyone gets complacent when cashing in, and I don't think that's why Singleton struggles. He just didn't pan out. Smart decision by him to agree to the deal when he did.
Personally, I wouldn't have offered that kind of contract to a guy with the drug history he has. I know it may be a bit judgy but cmon...Potheads and especially those who claim to be addicted to it like Jon says he is tend to be lazy and DGAF anyways.
Give any kind of addict a contract early on and I'd bet the majority of them will flame out. It's a recipe for failure.

Only people who are internally motivated or driven by a passion continue to drive after an incentive like that goes away. After trying a million other things, the most effective incentive has still proven to be money. If you have any motivation concerns, you don't offer a contract like that.iBrad said:

Your end goal is to find out what motivates someone and then structure their incentives to reward them with that thing when they perform how you want them to perform. It's still a lesson to learn for many people (not a single person that works for me has identical pay or vacation structures) and I figured it was worth calling out. For many athletes it is still money.
I think it is pretty clear based on his weight and lack of improvement that his motivation isn't the same. Was he ever going to be great? We don't know - and probably not. But to pretend the contract didn't take off some of the financial pressure that was driving him to work towards the MLB is asinine. And that's not even meant as a personal slight to him - it's far easier to chase the dream than to know how to act or what to do when you achieve it.
