Given what Boston gave up for Sale, I'm glad we came in second.

If we go get him and not touch the pitching staff, I would be just fine with it. Sometimes strengthening a strength as effective as strengthening a weakness.
We can afford to be middle of the pack pitching if we're elite hitting. The Sox won 93 games last year a staff about as good as ours. And I think our offense can be better than theirs last year. Pitching too is Dallas rebounds.

Agreed. I'd even go 3/70.
So what's the assessment on Quintana? I don't know much about him but looking at his stats he seems like a top end workhorse type starter. Not really a Cy Young type but a quality #2 starter.

Looking at WAR from 2013 through 2016, Quintana is the 7th best pitcher in baseball. He gets no Cy Young love because the White Sox don't contend nor do they give him wins.Quote:

The 6 pitchers above him have Wins in the 50s and 60s. He is literally .500 with 40 wins. Those other pitchers have close to combined W-L of around 100. His is 80 (lots of no decisions).
He has a higher WAR (by .1) than Bumgarner with 50 less IP.
If we let the rangers get Edwin for 3/60 or less, that WILL be a huge failure this offseason, and this is not a joke nor hyperbole.

If you want to nitpick, sure. Sale is one of the 6 pitchers better than he is. He also got 13 more wins for a 3.4 WAR difference.
Wins by pitchers with less WAR than Quintana:
Bumgarner - 64
Arrieta - 55
Hamels - 45
King Felix - 56
Greinke - 64
Wainwright - 54
Quintana - 40 wins.
You'd hear more about him in Cy Young conversation if his win total was better or if the team was good enough to warrant 2 pitchers in the conversation (like the Cubs last year)

"Bug" in how fangraphs displays it. If you look at just 2016, he didnt have the qualified number of innings. if you change that MIn IP filter from "qualified" to "0", you will see that he was, by far, the best pitcher in baseball last year...even though he didnt play much. (not sure if this was your actual question)

I wouldn't mind signing EE to a three year deal, trading Gattis, and putting together some type of trade for Quintana that lightens the log jam at first and of back of the rotation starters.
