Since we have been eliminated I thought I would start this thread for comments and observation about the tournament as a whole.
#2 seed St, Louis was eliminated by Memphis today which means #3 seed Arkansas should be hosting a regional. Memphis finished with a RPI of 77 after winning their conference tournament.

6 home teams did not advance to the second round: St. Louis, Southern Cal, Rutgers, Clemson, Tennessee and North Carolina State. The biggest beneficiary of the upsets is Arkansas which now gets to host since St. Louis lost to Memphis. 5 of the 32 games went to overtime, with only 1 going to a PK shootout. Xavier scored 3 goals in OT to beat Tennessee, and Santa Clara scored with 26 seconds left in the 2nd OT to beat California. The SEC has the most teams left with 7. There were 7 yellow cards in the Fairleigh Dickinson - Virginia game with a FDU player getting a second yellow with 20 minutes left. The second round begins Thursday at North Carolina because BYU is one of the 4 teams there.

G needs to hit up Fairleigh for couple of those players, we need some muscle back in the lineup

That's up front. We get, pushed around too much. We need a player that will knock **** outta opposing players then tell the ref to eff off. Which was awesome to see that in person

There was only 1 PK shootout in the 32 first round games so naturally the first game in the second round went to a shootout with BYU winning the shootout over Stanford 5-4. Only 2 goals scored in 110 minutes despite a combined 22 shots on goal, including about a half dozen from inside the 6 yard box. North Carolina beat Georgia 3-1 in the second game tonight.

The start of the TCU -Michigan State game in South Bend has been postponed 1 hour due to snow accumulation. Lots of snow piled behind the goals for the Xavier-Virginia game in State College.

this game is wild- the ball goes nowhere on the ground- TCU trained all year for this snow game up 1-0

All of the 1 and 2 seeds advance to the Sweet 16. 2 unseeded teams advance, Memphis and Cal-Irvine. 3 second round games went to a shootout. 5 teams scored at least 4 goals in round 2. Only 1 quadrant has the tip 4 seeds left: 1 UCLA, 2 Penn State, 3 Virginia and 4 Northwestern. Duke scored on a corner with 2:16 left in regulation to beat tu 1-0. 1-seed Alabama scored on a PK and an own goal by Portland to win 2-1.
Sweet 16 starts today with BYU at North Carolina at 10:30 AM central.

Correction. 2 seed St. Louis lost to Memphis in the first round. All of the home teams in the second round advanced to the Sweet 16. UNC beat BYU 3-2 today to make the Elite 8.

Bama vs the Anteaters of UC Irvine

Most of Bama playing in short sleeves which is a good sign of an active team

With just the Northwestern at UCLA match to play, there are 5 ACC teams in the Elite 8 and 2 SEC teams. Notre Dame and North Carolina play each other so there will be at least 1 ACC team in the College Cup and there could be 4. Only home team not to advance so far was Penn State which gave up a tying goal to Virginia with 2:18 left in regulation and lost in OT 3-2. Arkansas gave up a tying goal to Memphis with 2:37 left in regulation but won the PK shootout 3-2. It was 25 degrees at the TCU-Notre Dame game.

The seeding held pretty good with 8 of the top 12 seeds making the Elite 8. All 4 1-seeds, 2 2-seeds and 2 3-seeds. 5 ACC teams, 2 from the SEC West, and a PAC-12 team.

The presence of 2 SEC West teams in the elite eight is eye-popping. Texas A&M soccer has to get a LOT better to compete for SEC titles.

I was curious about the impact of no overtime. 4 teams got at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament without winning at least half of their games. Records do not include NCAA games.
North Carolina State won 7 of 19 (7-7-5)
Clemson won 8 of 17 (8-4-5)
LSU won 9 of 19 (9-3-7)
A&M won 9 of 20 (9-6-5)

No one in soccer would ever look at it that way, because draws are common.

If you want to do your analysis that way, you have to give a 1/2 win for each tie.

NC State would be 9.5 wins out of 19 (.500)
Clemson would be 10.5 wins out of 17 (.618)
LSU would be 12.5 wins out of 19 (.658)
Texas A&M would be 11.5 out of 20 (.575)

Alabama becomes the 5th SEC team to make the College Cup beating Duke 3-2 in OT. Florida has been twice, and this u sin 2014 and USC in 2017. Bama scored twice midway through the 2nd half but Duke scored twice on plays that Alabama argued were offside, and then Bama go the game winner with 2 minutes left in the first OT. Bama had 15 corners to Duke's 2. It was the 3rd straight year Duke got knocked out in the Elite 8.

Satisfying to see a SEC team out possess an ACC team. Except for a 3m Michelle Cooper explosion (it seemed she was way offside on the 2nd goal), Bama dominated the match. It will not doubt be ugly and interesting with the Razorbacks facing FSU tomorrow.

The seeding held pretty good with 3 1-seeds and 1 2-seed in the College Cup. It's kind of hard to call 2-seed North Carolina's win at Notre Dame an upset. In the first 4 rounds the home team advanced in 44 of the 52 games in which a team played on its home field. Neither us in 2014 or South Carolina in 2017 was able to get a SEC team to the Final and all Alabama has to do to get there is beat UCLA.

UCLA seemed to turn up their offense early in the second half to score 2 goals. Alabama had some chances with a goal being waved off due to offside and a couple of near misses. The last goal scored by a SEC player in the College Cup was by Kelley Monogue in 2014.

Wow. UCLA ties North Carolina with 16 seconds left on a corner kick. Going to OT tied 2-2.

UNC led 2-0 until the 80th minute. Nutzo. UCLA has mostly had the run of play in OT. It's going to be a shame when this comes down to PKs

UCLA nearly had the go ahead goal, but VAR confirmed no goal. It was as close as you could get without it going across.
