I'm lost on the SEC tournament seeding.

On the SEC sports website, Vanderbilt with 19 points is ahead of USC with 24 points. How is that possible? Are the Aggies, with 22 points, a 4 seed because Arkansas, 25 points, the #1 seed? The Ags have the third best point total, actually by quite a bit.

Both east and west standings have teams with fewer points placed ahead of teams with more points.

Can anyone make sense of the standings?

The top 2 seeds are the division winners, which are determined by matches within each division. The rest of the seeds are based on points overall.

------- SEC West Standings -------
............................Division......Pts
Arkansas.................6-0..........18
Texas A&M.............4-1-1.......13
Alabama.................2-2-2........8
Ole Miss..................2-2-2........8
Auburn....................2-4...........6
Mississippi State....1-3-2........5
LSU..........................0-5-1........1

------- SEC East Standings --------
............................Division......Pts
Vanderbilt...............4-1-1.......13
South Carolina.......3-0-3.......12
Tennessee..............3-2-1.......10
Florida.....................3-2-1.......10
Georgia...................2-3-1........7
Kentucky.................1-4-1........4
Missouri..................1-5...........3

Thanks, Aggiesoccer#1fan (that's a long handle!). I knew they separated into divisions, but I didn't realize that the four out of division matches counted for so little. In a way it makes sense because you only play 4 of the 7 "other division" opponents.

I guess everyone is really sold on the tournament. But you could use the tournament for two more conference games and sneak the final one in earlier and have a complete round-robin. I'd prefer that to a tournament where the winner and runner-up has to play at least three games right before beginning NCAA tournament play.

One reason the SEC only plays 10 conference games is to get more teams in the NCAA Tournament. At the radio show several years ago G and Curt Magnuson explained that playing more conference games does not help a conference get more teams into the NCAA Tournament, and the optimal number was 10 or 11 conference games. If the SEC played a round robin, then each team would play only 6 or 7 non-conference games and a team would have fewer opportunities to play quality non-conference teams to boost their RPI.
I got home in time to watch the SEC Network soccer coverage, and 2 of the people were jealous of the 3rd because she was going to call our game against Florida which was the match of the day. And our game is not on the SEC Network because the network is showing the North Florida - UK basketball game.

Based on that, how did we not end up the #3 seed?

I think the question has more to do with Vanderbilt - how are they the #2?

Because they won the east

So, Vanderbilt, who has less points overall than both us and South Carolina, are the number 2 seed and win the East, BUT South Carolina gets the 3 seed over us based on overall points.

I just don't get how they select to use overall points versus your division points for seeding. Stick to one.

Did anyone else hear Jill Loyden say that Aggie Soccer had won a national championship? I guess she was thinking of the College Cup appearance.

Arkansas' only conference loss came to South Carolina. Should be a good game tomorrow as I expect them to avenge the loss

South Carolina wins. Arkansas had their opportunities but didn't take good enough shots. Arkansas is runner up for the fourth year in a row.

Chris Henderson of All White Kit projects 5 SEC teams making the dance: A&M, Arky, UF, USC and Vandy. 3 teams from Texas won their league's automatic bid: UNT, Lamar and Prairie View. Big question is whether tu gets in. Their RPI was 47 after yesterday's games. Texas Tech will be hosting. We have hosted Lamar and UNT the last 2 years. I think the committee will send #261 Prairie View to Arkansas so that a 1 or 2 seed plays a lesser quality opponent.

I don't expect it to happen but always fun to look at, allwhitekit.com projects the following for us:

1st Round:
North Texas at Texas A&M

Then travel to Fayetteville, Arkansas to play the winner of:
[3] Oklahoma State vs Lamar

Not arguing that, but some had them as high as a 3 seed.
