Not just in the US, but around the world. 35 million people in Brazil watched their final match alone.

Great to see, this will force federations to invest, because tv money and tournament money is going up after this, many of the excuses are melting away, it won't just be five or 7 countries truly investing anymore.

One of the bigger changes is that the big european clubs now at least field a "professional" ladies squad.

But there is a serious potential downside: Americans are fair-weather fans. If there is parity on the women's stage and the Americans can't simply dominate, the TV cash cow will lose its luster.

As the european investment continues to grow, we also face the idea of losing all of our stars to clubs overseas. It's already happening a bit, but it'll pick up steam pretty quickly if we don't offer suitable alternatives stateside.

FWIW that's not a bad thing for player development, just for exposure of the women's game domestically

They will still play for the US national team tho. Rapinoe plays over seas, but plays for team USA In the big tournaments.

The trick is getting views and attendance outside of world cup years. The professional leagues becoming successful will be key, because they never have been before.

7.03M viewer on Fox + 1.02 across Telemundo. Fantastic numbers but England had 11.7M and the Netherlands had 1.9M (11% of the entire population!). Speaks to how excited Europe is for women's football...we're going to get parity in the top 10+ teams very soon.

NWSL just had the rest of their season picked up by ESPN.

A lot of that was conservatives rooting for this team to lose for some odd reason.

I don't know if the politics board was actually watching or just refreshing Ann Coulter's Twitter.

At any rate, since the games have been during working hours, there's been that challenge/limitation on American viewership. It will obviously be interesting to see how the finals ratings go on a Sunday morning.

And ESPN News and ESPN2 at that (not ESPN+)

Yeah, the time difference probably explains the lower US #s. I'm prepared to see some not-so-hot viewership for the final just because of the awful time slot here domestically.

Yeah that time slot is rough for US viewers, but more good news for female football fans in Europe:

The women's game will never bring in as much money as the men's. BUT the us is the one country where it might be close. So there is some logic in our ladies asking for a bigger slice of the pie.

Also, it's not like male athletes in the NFL, NBA, and MLB never complain about their pay....

Why doesn't any journalist worth their salt look up the TV viewership for the Gold cup in 2018 for the USWNT and compare it to the 2019 gold cup for the USMNT.

Hell, even go as far back as 2015 if you want. The USA Jamaica semi final got 1.2 million viewers. on FS1 back then.

I happened to look this up.

https://worldsoccertalk.com/2018/12/20/uswnt-tv-viewership-declines-20-2018/

The highest 2018 USWNT Gold Cup TV viewership was the final at 736k. The rest was in the 100 to 200k.

The USMNT 2019 Gold Cup opener had 744k on FS1.

Note:

It is clear Grapesoda2525 that you haven't been following the NWSL much because Rapinoe has been playing for one of the NWSL teams, the Reign, since the league started in 2013. Currently she is listed as the team captain.

14 million in the US, 27 percent of all TVs on at the time.

And worldwide numbers strong too.
