They should start by letting fans actually watch the games on ESPN+ without blacking out in market games.

Will never happen. The entry fee is too high, tv would never allow loss of the NY market (for example) if NYRB were demoted and Rochester was promoted. Just not going to happen here ever, unfortunately.

The conversation on Wikipedia on the rejection of the MP & Silva offer in 2017 of $4 billion over 10 years for broadcast rights is relevant to the pro/rel conversation:

"n July 2017, it was reported that Major League Soccer had rejected a $4 billion offer by MP & Silva to acquire all television rights to the league for 10 years following the conclusion of its current contracts with Fox, ESPN, and Univision. While it represents a substantial increase over the current agreements, MP & Silva insisted that the deal would be conditional on Major League Soccer adopting a promotion and relegation system similar to other international leagues. Although the league stated that it rejected the offer due to the exclusive periods that the current rightsholders have to negotiate extensions to their contracts, it was pointed out by the media that Major League Soccer had long-opposed the adoption of promotion and relegation, continuing to utilize the fixed, franchise-based model used in other U.S. sports leagues.[101][102] Furthermore, MP & Silva founder Riccardo Silva appeared to have a conflict of interest because he also owned Miami FC of the NASL, which stood to benefit from such a promotion and relegation system."

How do they get around the FIFA laws?

I might be the only one, but I feel like this will dilute the talent pool even more than it already is. We'd have a better product if we had fewer teams, not more.

Long term, in a nation of this size, more teams means more professional academies and more opportunities = larger talent pool. That only holds if MLS is determined to invest in academies though.

There is just so much wrong with soccer in America. The MLS acts like they are the EPL. They aren't. US soccer kisses their feet constantly and puts subpar "pro" players in the national team even though there are better players around. The national camps are a joke. Invites go to players with parents that "work the system."

For a player to break into pro soccer in America, the most effective route is to get to Europe. If you have some success is Sweden or someplace like that, all of a sudden US soccer takes an interest an you get invited to camps. Do well at the camps and you might get the attention of an MLS side. If an MLS side picks you up, you'll get a look at the national team. If the MLS side forces you into the national team, you'll stay there.

That's why Jurgen encouraged guys to go to Europe. He saw what a political, second class **** show the MLS was.

How do they get around the FIFA laws?

basically - they don't care about the penalty.

Canada and Australia also do not follow that.

Quote:

Since 2008, the Fdration Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has mandated promotion and relegation to be implemented by every 211 member association around the world, in full compliance with FIFA statutes in order to give every affiliated club hundreds of thousands worldwide the opportunity and choice to enter the official FIFA International Promotion and Relegation Pyramid. The best clubs from the top division of each open national promotion and relegation pyramid get promoted to the continental championships (the AFC Champions League, CAF Champions League, CONCACAF Champions League, CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores, OFC Champions League, and UEFA Champions League) and the best from those tournaments in turn get promoted to the intercontinental championship (the FIFA Club World Cup) for a chance to become FIFA club world champions. For the past 10 years, the Football Federation Australia (FFA), the Canadian Soccer Association (CSA), and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) have all been violating FIFA statutes, regulations, and decisions. Specifically, (a) Regulations Governing the Application of the Statutes Part IV. Sporting Integrity Article 9. Principle of Promotion and Relegation; (b) Definitions Part II. Membership Article 19. Independence of member associations and their bodies; and (c) Definitions Part II. Membership Article 14. Member Association's Obligations. By not having a national promotion and relegation system in place, the affiliated clubs in the three respective countries (Australia, Canada, and the USA) do not have a chance to enter and compete under merit of play in the only sanctioned pathway to the FIFA Club World Cup the world club championship of football / soccer within FIFA.

more details then you would want to know.... and there is a recommendation in there how the USSF could keep MLS as a closed franchise league and still meet the FIFA requirements (he cals it the India model).

Basically by keeping MLS as is and qualifying from it to a Cup that is open to all other lower leagues in a promotion/relegation model and the champion and other qualifiers coming out of that side Cup.

There is also a lawsuit pending trying to force MLS to go to pro/rel model.

If our youth programs were setup like the rest of the world, I'd agree with you completely. And I'll concede that long-term it might be a good decision for domestic development, and if so, that's a win.

But as far as international talent is concerned, there's only a finite pool of players willing to come play in MLS, and just about all of them are guys who aren't good enough for Europe. I'd rather see us concentrate our capital within MLS and be able to afford better players than stretch it thinner.

MLS' league ownership model could be an advantage but instead they continue to come up with ways to make it a liability.

MLS is now playing nice with solidarity payments, which should only help in deveolping and selling on players. http://www.espn.com/soccer/major-league-soccer/story/3829402/mls-clubs-to-receive-solidarity-payments-after-league-agrees-to-follow-fifa-rule?src=com

Also the Sounders' u17 tram won the Generation Adidas Cup in frisco, beating Valencia in the final 1-0. First time an MLS academy team has won it.

The United Soccer League is targeting to increase the number of teams in their Championship(Level 2) and League 1(Level 3) leagues each to 40 teams by 2026 World Cup. USL Championship is currently at 36 teams and USL League 1 just started play this year at 10 teams. USL League 2(Level 4) is currently at 72 teams.
