7 points = 77 that's now the key. 2 wins and a draw at least. winning out would of course clinch.

but at 77:

it would mean Arsenal would need 12 to pass us in 4 games and cannot tie us (cannot get 11 in 4 games) so they would have no margin for error.

and it would mean Chelsea cannot catch us with 3 games left and needing 10 points.

So
root for ManU to beat CHE.
then root for Leicester in both matches against CHE and ARS

I know we want Leicester to win, and I certainly hope they do, but I'm still not over 2015-16.

Max for each is

Chelsea 76
Arsenal 75
MU 73

And Chelsea and MU play next so only one of them can max out and the other is likely eliminated. A tie would do neither any favors really.

So we need 7 points to clinch 3rd. 6 points clinches 4th.

There is the odd possibility that only 3 or 4 EPL teams qualify based on placement - if an EPL team wins either the CL or Europa. Of course if Tottenham or Liverpool win CL and are top 4 anyway that is moot. Arsenal and Chelsea are in the semifinals of the Europa league so one of them could steal a spot in CL anyway and eliminate one qualifying spot for EPL.

I'm pretty sure they changed that rule recently. I'm pretty sure they get an extra slot now instead of how it used to be.

Really need to stay third.

They changed the rule that eliminated us in 2012 but - the overriding rule is no more than 5 from any league in CL. So if EPL have 2 auto qualifiers from Europa and CL winners (who are not in the top 4) then only top 3 go.

But there are also other scenarios that still would limit EPL to 4 teams and only the top 3 because of an auto qualifier.

Here is a good article on all the scenarios:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/47806720

Selected scenarios:

Quote:

Tottenham and Liverpool have both reached the Champions League semi-finals.

If one of those sides become European champions and finish in the top four of the Premier League, then only four English teams go into next season's Champions League. The 'extra' group stage spot would go to the Austrian champions, who otherwise need to go through qualifying as Uefa's 11th-ranked league.

If EPL teams win both CL and Europa:

Quote:

If English teams were to win both tournaments, the Premier League's fourth-placed team would not qualify for the Champions League and instead would drop into the Europa League group stages.

The scenario from 2012 is different because that's just the CL winner scenario not both - which has been changed:

Quote:

In 2012 Tottenham finished fourth but missed out because Chelsea won the Champions League - but Spurs would have qualified under the current rules.

All I gotta say is thank you Wolves and City! Now we take care of our business and there are no issues. Minimum 7 points should be obtained from final 3 fixtures, but I feel confident in securing all 9.

COYS!!

Our injuries and subsequent lack of depth has really shown up today. Besides Kane, we really could have used a spark from Lamela and some midfield control from Sissoko. Really disappointing.

I almost think we should park the bus against Ajax on Tuesday and just try to nick an away goal the next week. Poch is way braver and smarter than me, so that won't happen.
