According to the 538 game picker. The difference in the outcome of this game on these two teams world cup chances is minimal. Belgium has a 9% chance of winning the world cup from first place and a 10% chance from second place.

For England it is 7% and 8%

Any advantage that is supposedly gained from harder/easier later games is almost totally wiped out by a larger chance of nat even making it to the quarters for both teams if they finish 2nd.

Do they do this to make the semis though? Avoiding Brazil (even if playing Colombia is harder) seems like a huge advantage to get to the semis, which would be huge for either country
