2-1 Monterrey. Balogun missed a 1v1 to equalise. Our defense gets cut apart on the youth level as well

Just a quick recap from yesterday watching the youth team. They are definitely trying to implement EmeryBall throughout the entire club. Trying to play out the back, but the young midfield really struggled from being pressed by Monterrey. Arsenal were really physical which basically played in the Liga MX team's hands because they ingrain diving at a very early age in Mexico. They also teach time wasting which started at about 30 minutes. Anytime they were touched they rolled around like little kids. It was really pissing off the Arsenal players.

Due to the lack of control in the midfield, the kids were very susceptible to the counter and Monterrey score all 3 of their goals on counter attacks. Technically, the Mexicans were much better ball handlers while the English kids were simply much stronger.

With about 10-15 minutes left, Harry Clarke had a really bad challenge that was a definitely straight red card right in front of the Monterrey bench and the entire Mexican bench rushed the field and started a giant shoving match/fight. Clarke was the only one sent off, but they really could have sent most the Monterrey bench off as they all rushed the pitch and started everything. Ref was some chick from New Zealand and she never had any control from the first whistle.

Loved that one kid from Arsenal was sitting their yelling "I play for Arsenal, who the **** are you". He then put on a dribbling clinic on the left side and embarrassed the Monterrey RB. Stanley Flaherty is now my favorite player. Other players that stood out were Sam Greenwood, Mark McGuinness and Folarin Balogun.

All in all, Arsenal struggled with the press and the technical ability of the Mexican side. They also struggled in the TX heat and looked gassed pretty quickly. Fun to see the young guns play. They were pretty happy/shocked to walk out to an Arsenal Supporter group and they came over after the match.

Lots of deserved ripping on Arsenal in the pre-game.

Well, we sheet the bed against Everton. Our destiny was squarely in our hands and now it is less and less such every time we fail to get 3.

Losing on the road consistently = mentally weak - no leadership.

Hopefully they prove everybody wrong today.

Probably a harsh yellow, but from behind it looks like he definitely is throwing an elbow
PJYoung

He 100% threw that elbow on purpose. You can see him line it up and deliver it as he runs by.

Thuggish player.

Red may have been harsh but it was 100% intentional. There was zero reason for his arm to be up that high, even with the height disparity.

Looked to be tactical and we went to a back 3 with more midfield cover, but we are now back to 4 at the back again

That's what I assumed but wasn't sure if he got hurt.

I think we went back to a back 4 because Miki was dropping the ball as a WB.

Whew. Had to get 3 points and it happened. However it happened it happened.

Feels like we don't get 3 points there 9 times out of 10.

It was our lucky day. A bit of a fluke goal and a red card but I'll take it.

I just don't understand how it can be that different from that performance compared to the one on Thursday

PJ said it well. We have a mental toughness issue. Team needs 1-2 on the field coaches to ride their ass to stay on task. Instead we have guys like Ozil that come on at half and lazily loaf around and that mentality rubs off of the others.

We have guys that work hard (Kos) but they are not vocal leaders. We need some vocal guys to get guys pumped up.

A win is a win but need to better to stay top 4 and/or win the Europa League.

In the battle for 3rd/4th...

Current standings...

Team ------- MP -- GD -- Pts
Liverpool -- 34 --- 57 --- 85
City --------- 33 --- 65 --- 83
Spurs ------ 33 --- 30 --- 67
Arsenal ---- 33 --- 26 --- 66
Chelsea --- 34 --- 21 --- 66
ManU ------ 33 --- 19 --- 64

Spurs
have City, Brighton, West Ham, Bournmouth & Everton.
Assume they lose to City and likely win the other 4

Arsenal
have Palace, Wolves, Leicester, Brighton & Burnley.
Winnable games but 3 of the 5 are away. Leicester in particular will be tough.

Chelsea
have Burnley, ManU, Watford & Leicester
I think they lose to ManU and likely win the others. Leicester could be a trap game to end the season.

ManU
have Everton, City, Chelsea, Huddersfield & Cardiff
Their next stretch is the toughest. Barca leg 2 tomorrow and then Everton, City & Chelsea in a 8 day span starting Sun. Think they could drop pts to one or both City & Chelsea.

Bottom line
Our path should be easy right now. We have fewer tests on paper if not for our away issues. Win out and we are virtually guaranteed 4th. If Spurs falters at all we could jump into 3rd. If we falter, it could mean another 6th place finish.
