Really good read. He raises a great point about the Euro rules restricting American players from traveling to European clubs to play until age 18.

Not sure there is anything that can be done on the age 18 requirement for Europe

It's a FIFA rule meant to keep clubs from scouring developing nations and kidnapping their youth talent. Surely they can figure out a way to allow 16 and 17 year old players from other non-Euro countries to enter academies with their parents' permission? If the USSF leadership were to put some pressure on FIFA to change the rule, would the European NT leaders push back at all?

This requires the USSF (LMAO) to take action and then FIFA (even bigger LMAO) to help out.

They're just not a great team lately. Didn't even make it out of group the last two WCs.

Just in a down cycle since the 2006 win.

They had the huge match fixing scandal to deal with too. That was the thing that was so bad that even the hyper-corrupt Italian government had to step in and nuke juventus down to Serie B and severely punish other clubs.

That coupled with the financial woes that forced major clubs like Fiorentina and Napoli into restructuring and down to the lower leagues probably caused serious problems at the top level and in the youth development system.

Seems to me, one way for us to "cheat" is to allow younger studs play up 2-4 or so.

I'm not sure a solution is close or all that realistic.

Even without this rule, I'm not sure that Americans would necessarily find Europe a land o' opportunity.

It can be pretty hard to get your foot in the door and stick around the good youth clubs; and many of those clubs aren't even quick to bring in kids from other European countries that aren't subject to this rule. Many place a priority on domestic youth players.

It all just reiterates that we have to get our own youth development system right.
