2 games in a row now where a late goal keeps the season alive as far as SEC title hopes. It was going to take something special to score tonight with all the missed chances and a great save by the Ole Miss GK on great shot by Watt earlier in the game. Harvey basically dribbled through half the defense and set up her own game winning shot, which was very similar to Watt's but just out of the reach of the GK. Normally I wouldn't encourage a lot of plays where you take on the entire defense, but because of all the injuries to key players and not much depth, I think Harvey will need to do more of this the rest of the season.
A&M got off to a good start but then it was obvious the team was feeling the effects of playing only 13-14 players a game during a brutal number of games over a 14 day period. The midfield could hardly run outside of Harvey and at times Malherbe. Watt set up some good chances in the 1st half but we just couldn't finish. But Ole Miss was really controlling the game in the latter minutes of the half and the defense was hanging on for dear life to just get to halftime. In the 2nd half it was pretty even, with both teams having chances on goal, but I don't know how Ole Miss missed a couple of point blank chances, including one that was basically an open net. So overall, with a little luck, the defense held up against a potent attack. The midfield did really struggle to keep control of the ball and build attacks, with most of the chances coming on long balls from the back line.
A&M desperately needs Emily Bates back in the lineup because right now there are only 3 dangerous players on the field for us right now in Watt, Harvey, and Malherbe. Thankfully we now have a week off to prepare for the last couple of games of the season. With this current winning streak, the goals are still there for the team (outside of a #1 seed in the NCAAs) so it's been good to see the team begin to trust that they will find a way to win games in the end.
