I like winning the Gold Cup, primarily because I want to go to the Confederations Cup. Looks like we'll have to do it with our B roster.

This was Arena's thoughts today:
Quote:

U.S. coach Bruce Arena told SI.com that it's unlikely 18-year-old rising star Christian Pulisic will be called into the U.S. roster for any part of July's CONCACAF Gold Cup.

"I doubt it," Arena said when asked specifically if he would call in Pulisic, who is on the 40-man Gold Cup preliminary roster, from which the 23-man final roster (and up to six replacements for the knockout rounds) can be selected.

"It's bad timing for [the Gold Cup], because the guys in Europe have gone through this long club season and now the World Cup qualifiers. They need a break. They have three weeks off, and asking them to come in for Gold Cup makes no sense. It would take three weeks to get them ready."

When asked how many players on the Gold Cup roster will come from his best possible U.S. roster, Arena said: "Almost none. Very few. Maybe [Omar] Gonzlez and [Matt] Besler. Maybe [Clint] Dempsey and [Jozy] Altidore at some point. [Darlington] Nagbe is a possibility.

"I have to see in the next couple weeks how everyone is doing. We're pretty sure [Brad] Guzan is coming in. [Tim] Howard can come in after the group stage. So we'll have to name at least two other goalkeepers."

Are other countries (primarily Mexico) holding their best roster out?

Mexico is in the Confederations Cup right now and sent their A Team, so they will be fielding a sub-par squad as well.

I'm sure most of the other nations will be sending their top talent.

The European based players (Pulisic, Brooks, Johnson, Yedlin, Cameron) all need a break. I don't want them playing all summer and then being spent by the time we get around to the WC next summer.

Our A team played a full international tournament last summer (Copa), so I don't have any issue giving many of them some time off.

The winner will play the 2019 winner for a spot in the next Confederations Cup, so would be nice to get this one in the bag, the 2019 version will likely feature more countries' A team. Our group is an easy one, with the one tough match being the first one against Panama. Martinique and Nicaragua should be matches where our B squad will role.

Win the group and you won't really have a difficult match until maybe the semifinals, if we get Costa Rica, then you can bring in more of the A players for the knockout rounds.

Will be good to see some of the younger guys get an opportunity to shine for Arena. The Preliminary roster was (I bolded some of the younger guys I would really like to see get some PT):

Goalkeepers (6)

Unless we win both. Then there is no playoff.

i want to see Mr. Sydney Leroux get some minutes as well as Greg Garza and Eric Lichja. We need to identify the backups (not named Graham Zusi) to Yedlin and Villafana for the rest of WC qualifiers and WC next year.

Want to cap tie Gonzalez (G), Saief and Roldan as well.

It's a great opportunity for guys to get a chance to impress at the international level. For the first time we have a deep talent pool and need to give chances to guys beyond our first team. It will actually be great to watch, too. We are in the midst of a generational torch pass just like we were after the 02 WC. We need to do a better job than we did then.

Plus isn't the confederations cup being done away with after this edition?

We need to cap tie Jesse Gonzalez if he's as good as everyone seems to think he is.

Which stars? The ones hidden in the blue or the shoulder ones?

I absolutely love this jersey. Not 100% sure on the shoulder stars - I'll have to see it on an actual human first. Absolutely, definitely buying it, though.

It's understood that this is a jersey just for this year, for the Gold Cup, and that we'll have two new jerseys next year (hopefully for the World Cup). My fervent hope is that this signals a return to hoops, with next year having a return to the Waldos using the new crest.

Whatever happens, this kit is fire, and could easily become a recurring theme, if Nike ever lets us develop a national identity. I'd be thrilled if our identity started involving hoops every year, changing up which colors are involved.

So make Puerto Rico the 51st state. They can buy in with 10 bottles of quality rum for everybody. Problem solved.
