Ah, that makes sense. Thought you might just live in the heart of the city.

Conroe is the 10th fastest growing large city in the nation. It's changed a lot since I moved here about 7 years ago. I imagine it's a different world from where you grew up.

BIG TIME! It was about 25k when I was a kid. Much has changed, specifically the populace.

My grandparents graduated from Crockett HS in '35 & my parents were class of '68 from CHS. A lot has changed since then too.

My Great-granddad moved to Conroe during the oil boom to be a doctor. His old house is now a parking lot downtown. Its pry changed some since then.

This thread is very Conroe-centric.

What're your favorite restaurants in the area, Smith&Co?

Asian = Hunan Village by Academy, been grubbing there for decades.

Dirty Mexican tacos = La Palma on Ave G/Frazier, hit this up late night a lot.

Quality brews & grub = Red Brick Tavern on the square. I really enjoy this place because they keep SA & Karbach seasonals on tap.

Burgers = Vernon's BBQ aka The Beer Garden to us locals. Burger Fresh by Rivershire is a good alternative

Mexican = Los Cucos in Panther Creek (South County, I don't say The Woodlands) Cucos in Conroe blows.

BBQ = Corkscrew all damn day. That **** is snortable. I have two peach cobblers in my fridge from Saturday. McKenzie's is meh.

That's an EXCELLENT list! We should party.

I prefer La Palma Restaurant on 105. They still have the tacos but they also have a full menu. Their Guisada is the best I've had in the area since Eva's closed. I'm there once a week. Top Notch.

There's no great Tex-Mex or Mexican spots aside from La Palma. El Sol is solid for me though.

I LOVE Red Brick Tavern. That's our Friday night spot when we are in town (and don't want to head down to The Woodlands).

I hit the beer garden up for Fish Tacos. Burger Fresh used to be my weekly spot.

You are FREAKIN spot on with the BBQ assessment. I've tried everything in the area and the best we have is just meh. ..Except for Corkscrew. I've been singing their praises for almost 2 years since stumbling upon them. SO excited that they made the Top 50. They are Top 10 in the state for me.

Best Pizza is obviously Pizza Shack, but Vero is top notch as well. Vero is so well run, the vision was executed perfectly. He could franchise the model.

Black Walnut is my other favorite place in the area. And everything Hubbell & Hudson touches is gold for me.

I hit up Vero & Joe's a lot. Vero is pretty damn good, love their ceasar salad!

Agreed on Black Walnut too, love their breakfast.

Have you had Brothers Pizza in South County? Or Grimaldi's?

Yeah. We've enjoyed living there.

We really need to get a group together to watch a game sometime.

Well, if we're talking about Conroe, then I guess I should chime in since I was born and raised there. And all my family still lives there (I don't anymore).

Asian = Never really cared for Hunan Village. I'm not a big asian food eater but when I do, usually just get a sweet and sour chicken combo from China Delight (its cheap and doesn't taste too bad)

Dirty Mexican tacos = Agree with La Palma

Burgers = Beer Garden's for sure, used to spend alot of time there in high school (varsity FB players always had dinner there on wednesday night during the season)

Mexican = Los Cucos is horrible. I always like going to the mexican restaurant on south frazier in the same strip center as the bingo hall is now. can't remember the name.

BBQ = Never been to corkscrew's since I'm not going all the way to spring just to get bbq. Used to always like getting bbq from gene's but haven't had any from there since the moved up frazier into the old buckalew building.

Yes, graduated in 2000. I was actually born in the old Doctor's Hospital right across from the high school (now it is the CISD admin office I think).

I had Gene's a while back in the old location. It was nothing special. Had it for lunch again recently at the new building and it was flat AWFUL. I know they heated the meat up in the microwave...

My BBQ Ratings for the area (Ranked in order):

Corkscrew: A-
Kickin Ash (Montgomery): B-
McKenzie's:: C+ (Nothing special, but consistent.)
Zach's BBQ (Willis): C (Ribs are high point)
Alphin BBQ (Plantersville): C
Smokey Moe's: C- (Meats have little character, I like the sauce)
Texan's BBQ (Willis): C- (Ribs are high point)
Spring Creek BBQ: C- (Everything you expect from a Chain)
New Zion (Huntsville): C- (Everything comes slathered in sauce. Without the ribs, this would be a D)
Backyard BBQ (Lake Conroe): D+ (Meats had no natural flavor)
Vernon's: D+ (This is just their BBQ rating. I love their hamburgers, fish tacos & Johnny's Special. But the BBQ is awful)
Mama J's (The Woodlands): D (Where's the smoke?)
Leroy's (Willis): D
Gene's Hickory Hut: D-
Yo Mama's (Montgomery): D- (Openly microwaved meats. Awful)

PM has been sending minors & calling the cops over to Corkscrew's free beer Saturday's. They hate Corkscrew, wonder why. I've never been to PM & dont know anyone who has.
