mutts are thought of as dirty and undesireable in the dog world. The collie is clean, pure bread and has a striking appearance.

Just get her to stop barking and all will be okay.

Hey now...collies come in lots of different colors and coats..check out the short coated smooth collies in the middle and on the right...the blue merle in the middle is a cool color...

January 18, 1945, Reveille I died. She was buried at 5:30 pm the next day. For several years there was no consideration of replacing her as school mascot.

But in April 1951, in a general student body election the vote was 4,054 to 280 in favor of obtaining a new mascot. In a different ballot it was decided that this mascot should be a German Shepherd dog.

Over the years there were other unofficial dog mascots on campus such as Tripod, Spot and Ranger but none were suitable to the student body as a whole to replace Reveille I.

In about 1953 with no further communication with the student body by the administration, a collie was selected and named Reveille II and A&M's official mascot.

Sweet. GS are cool, but odds are eventually a GS will give some kid about 40 stitches when it doesn't like the way they're looking at the handler. They have huge canines and a powerful bite...and hip displaysia problems.

I hate to break it to you, but the "mutt" wasn't a mutt, so much as a generic sheepdog/collie. A blend of various farm/herding breeds....not necessarily a heinz 57 dog...

As cool as it would be to have a mutt, it would be stupid for A&M to do so. Way too much marketing in the "image" of Reveille would be lost.

It has more to do with dog breeding than just Reveille. When people want a pure breed, inbreeding is a result over time. While there are positives, there are also negative traits that come along with it.

Instead we could tell the story of how a mutt more accurately represents the character of our school - someone from a background not pre-selected for greatness becoming something more than they ever thought they could be.

i have a rescue boxer that is a bad mofo, i even got tupac's "thug life" tattoo across his chest with the pistols. i will loan him to A&M for a few years.

I'm not too worried which breed Rev is, but that old school T A-and-M logo in the first photo is fly. Bring it back! No bevels, no clever font, bring it back just like that photo.

While she was not purebread, Dad always said she had a ton of border collie in her. If they wanted purebred, I never understood why not go with a border collie, plus they tend to be really bright.

I like the Collie breed, but as a mascot...not tough enough. How about a cow dog? If would fit right in with our ag culture and keep BEVO in line on gameday!
