I don't think he is top 20.

What did he do that Doug Flutie didnt do 30 years earlier. They had the EXACT same career except JFF was on a team loaded with future NFL guys and flutie was alone.

lead the sec in rushing? As mentioned above this gets forgotten for some reason - he was just short of 1500 yards playing against the best rush defenses in the country

Greatest dual threat QB of all time - - 10000 yards total with 2200 yards on the ground - in 2 seasons

Roger Staubach.

He was Johnny before Johnny.

Would've won 2 Heismans had he not been injured his senior year.

But I'd say it's those 2

Side note: Staubach also lettered in all 3 major men's sports during his 4 years at Navy. Scouts said he was good enough to go pro in all 3.

After Bo Jackson, Roger may have been the best college athlete ever

Bo Jackson and then Jim Brown says hi

Did you even read the entire post?

Yes, you misread mine. I meant Bo was the best, agreeing with you, and after him Jim Brown. JB was a better athlete than Roger. Several athletes better in college than Roger was, as great as he was.

This. And his second was overall a better season statistically. If we had any semblance of a defense we would have won 10+ games again and he could have legitimately had a second heisman. The only thing he didn't do that year was have a winning team on his side.

I encourage everyone to go watch the Duke game again. Johnny and Johnny alone pulled the team's head out of their asses and willed that team to victory.

I say yes, but I am biased. If we had a half way decent D, we would have been right there for a natty.

With that said, I can listen to arguments for others that all have legitimate reasons:
VY
Cam
Tebow
and the outlier as he was not really a dual threat in Burrow.

Well 10,000 yards in 2 years in the SEC was pretty damn good

Burrow can run a helluva lot better than anyone ever gives him credit for. He's no Michael Vick, but he's not a statue like Manning or Brady either

Not even close. VY gets my vote of the best I've seen and incredible performances on the biggest stages.

I will say he is on the list of all time greatest but it is difficult to see him as the best of all time. I doubt any would dispute that he is the best QB to ever play in the maroon and white.

Doesn't change the fact that his knee was down.

He skewered us with his legs in 2018 to the tune of 100 yards and 3 rushing TD's . He is a strong runner. They were so good offensively in 2019 and had so many other offensive weapons that he didn't need to run much in 2019.

Cam Newton had the single greatest season as a college QB. He carried an otherwise average Auburn team to a championship. Therefore he is the greatest college QB of all time.

I'd have to go with either Jamius or Tim Tebow

Comparing greatest seasons Cam threw for 2854 yards to Burrow's' 5671, Burrow doubled him up in TD passes (60 to 30), and Cam still threw more picks.

He was closer to Bucky than Burrow.

I don't get the comment that the team around him was bad in 2012 and the defense was bad. The team was absolutely loaded on offense and the defense was very good in 2012 but not as good as 2013. I think they could have won the national championship if they could have played for it.

"Best" can mean lots of different things so you have to break it down into sub categories.

Most exciting / most likely to convert a 3rd and 20 in a ridiculous way: Johnny Manziel
Best in one season: Joe Burrow or Cam Newton (depending on how much you love dual threats)
Most talented on a team with a laughable defense: Patrick Mahomes (Mahomes LOST a game in which he personally had over 800 yards of offense. Thanks Kingsbury.)
Best career: this is tough and would actually require some research. Maybe Baker Mayfield? Tim Tebow? Colt McCoy?
Best QB / biggest winner who couldn't actually throw very well: Tim Tebow and Tommy Frazier. Vince is honorable mention

2012 team would have won the title had they not screwed the pooch vs LSU. Five turnovers and lost by 5 pts. Give LSU credit tho , they had a good plan. Coulda, shoulda, woulda … didn't.

If he stayed all 3-4 years and won a title then yes.

But off the dome Tebow is the best of all time. Burrow had the best single season, and Cam had the most impressive season given he carried that Auburn team to a title when they really had no business being there without him.

Baker Mayfield is a poor man's JFF.
Anyone listing him above Johnny is off their rocker.

Johnny will get underrated historically because of his performance in the NFL but he is absolutely in the top 3 best college QB's of all time. He was an absolute cultural phenomenon as well. First freshman to win the Heisman.
He was a human cheat code. It was unreal.
2012 will go down with 1975 as perhaps the biggest "what if" years in Aggie football history.

To me, Johhny, Cam Newton and Vince Young were the most dynamic NCAA QB's in many years. All 3 could beat you in both running & throwing.
Joe Burrow comes in right behind them.

Sorry but Flutie couldn't carry JFF's jock. Yeah he had a famous and very lucky hail mary on a chuck and duck play.

And Manziel put the team on his back to win the Peach Bowl against Duke. Zero incompletions in the second half.

Most exciting player does not equal best:
Manziel = most exciting. But IMO there are a few QBs better than him like Tebow and Vince. Id throw Cam and Burrow in there but it was just one great season for each of them.

Manziel needed a title (even SEC title would do) and another year to be in that conversation.

I just think he really should have stayed another year or two. Him and that 2014 team could have been special.
You could argue the 2014 could have been a 10 win team with consistent QB play.

We 100% beat Mizzou and LSU at home in 2014 with Johnny(close games with average QB play from Allen). Still would have lost to miss state and bama, but the Ole Miss game would have been a toss up. So 10-2 likely and could have pushed for a second Heisman Trophy

2015 could have been even more special with Johnny. Our losses were to bama (where Allen threw 3 pick 6s), Ole Miss (where Allen threw like 20 straight incompletions), Auburn (where freshmen Kyler murray just struggled), and LSU (where we had zero offense against a bad lsu team)

I agree with you. If Johnny Manziel had stayed, we could have finished 9-3 (5-3 SEC) or 10-2 (6-2 SEC) and maybe even played in a NY6 bowl. We would have won home games against Missouri and LSU, and the home game against Ole Miss probably would have been a tossup. We outgained Ole Miss 455 total yards (401 passing and 54 rushing) to 338 total yards (178 passing and 160 rushing) and won the time of possession 32:40 to 27:20, but we lost the turnover margin 3 to 0. We still would have road games to Mississippi State and Alabama.

All 4 regular season losses to Alabama (home), Ole Miss (away), Auburn (home), and LSU (away) in 2015 were by 12+ points each. With Johnny Manziel, we would have beaten Auburn and/or LSU for another 9-3 (5-3 SEC) or 10-2 (6-2 SEC) regular season finish and potentially another NY6 bowl appearance.

Yep… Could've been three 10 win seasons in a four year stretch. But I do also think that 2015 season probably would've come together as the best one. That was a really good roster with a lot of NFL guys and you would've had the best quarterback in the country in his fourth year leading them.

We lost to bad teams in Auburn and LSU that year, and the main reason was because the offense struggled. I really think that would have been an 11 win regular season with Johnny leading it

Yes, that Auburn team finished 6-6 (2-6 SEC) in the regular season and dead last in the SEC West, and LSU had lost 3 consecutive games to Alabama (away), Arkansas (home), and Ole Miss (away) by a combined score of 99-4 before beating us 19-7. We had 3+ turnovers in each of those four losses, but our run defense struggled too. In fact, we allowed 230+ rushing yards in all four of those losses.

Alabama: 258 rushing yards on 45 carries (5.7 yards per carry) and 2 rushing touchdowns, 36:22 time of possession, and won the turnover margin 4 to 1

Ole Miss: 230 rushing yards on 51 carries (4.5 yards per carry) and 35:48 time of possession, despite losing the turnover margin 4 to 3

Auburn: 311 rushing yards on 52 carries (6.0 yards per carry) and 1 rushing touchdown, 33:57 time of possession, and won the turnover margin 3 to 0

LSU: 244 rushing yards on 47 carries (5.2 yards per carry) and 2 rushing touchdowns, 32:33 time of possession, and won the turnover margin 3 to 1

Great player for sure but best of all time...nope.

On the other hand, would we consider Mike Evans to be in the group of greatest receivers ever?

Evans is one of the greatest WRs to ever play the game of football at any level.

I can play that game too. 2019 Joe Burrow, who several on this thread are saying is the greatest college QB of all time, had Justin Jefferson AND Ja'Marr Chase on that team.

Exactly.

I'm convinced our own fans are legitimately the stupidest in the country.
