For decades now we've kept our program in good enough shape most years to qualify for the elite.
But as long as we get patently disfavorable treatment from governing bodies (NCAA sanctions, CFP selections in 2023), media, and ...shudder... zebras, we'll always rightfully be disappointed with the outcome.
The only way to rectify those factors is to engage against them across the full spectrum of available measures. Sure, we'll play the "square" game -- recruiting, coaching, fanbase support, etc. -- but until we get someone who will hit the big manipulators hard, outside the box, and without remorse (e.g. Albanian mafia affiliation would not be a red flag on the resume), we'll always be the nice guy who predictably finishes last.
