Cow hop opened in fall of 79 by a guy named Al Scazzero from New York. He had gone to Cornell. His brother Tony was the coach of the Lacrosse team for many years. You could get a cowpie and fries for $1.30 when they opened. You could get a T-bone and fries for $3 bucks. On sunday nights when the on campus stuff was closed you could always count on a line out the door. Cheap, but good. Greasy little place that was always the same every time you went there. I worked there one semester.
La Taqueria was opened by Donnie Anz, who was Don Ganter's original partner from the Dixie Chicken. He also started the Deluxe Burger Bar (his 1st rest. on his own in CS), and cafe eccel. I don't know if he owns any of them anymore.
I remember when somebody put in an Ice Cream Bar in Charlie's grocery at northgate--instant hit for Blue Bell--had a line every night.
Other cool places at Northgate: Backstage restaurant, owned by the same guy who owned Fish Richard's Half Century House ( upscale place), A record store ( can't remember the name), a video arcade, Farmer's Market deli.
Dixie chicken used to be half of its present size. The other half of it (where the rattlers are now) was a mixed drink bar called Miranda's. They converted it to its present layout during the summer of '80. They added the grill in the back not much later.
I hope Don Ganter has in his will when he dies that somebody gets the Chicken who will keep that sucker going. It would be sad to see that go the way of the other former northgate places
