What is the point of this post op?
The point is do you want a mediocre football program like ours has been the last 84+ years, or do you want a program that achieves multiple national championships like Alabama ? If we're ever going to get a Natty, it will not be with Elko or any of our current coaching staff; as I've posted before, all of them are mediocre (nothing personal against any of them, just based on their performance, past and present), and they will just continue our program of mediocrity.
As I've said multiple times on this forum, the time to start looking is
now. Next year will be year 86 of mediocrity anyway, so no need to worry about it. Hire a professional college football head coach search firm, with the requirement that they provide us a list of the top 5 coaches most likely to win a Natty for us. Then, we select the top candidate and go after him. Only if we can't get him (e.g., money, won't move, etc.) do we go after #2 on the list.
Also, we take only the names we are given by the search firm, and do not filter it by any other criteria than the ability to lead us to a Natty. For instance, it doesn't matter if he's "a good guy", "gets us", "has personal issues" [i.e., Sark], or any other subjective criteria. Finally, do not allow any BMAs, "insiders", or any other Aggie football "influencer" to be part of the process.
Take whatever time is necessary to get the #1 person, and don't worry about next year, or even the next. Hell, it 's been 84+ years already, what's another 2 or 3 ? Just take the time and get it right, then make the hire !
Follow that up with having the professional college football search firm do a search for the best OC, DC, etc. Also get any recommendations from the new HC. Put the list together and have the search firm work with the new HC to identify the top 5 coaches for the OC and DC positions. Then start with #1 and hire him, moving on to #2, if necessary. As with the HC, it doesn't matter if he's "a good guy", "gets us", "has personal issues" [i.e., Sark], or any other subjective criteria. And again, do not allow any of the BMAs, "insiders", or any other Aggie football "influencer" to be part of the process.
What do we have to lose ? We tried multiple coaches and approaches over the past 84+ years, finding them on our own, and that hasn't worked !
The ONLY valid ANNUAL goal for ALL Aggie Sports is a NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP!
Gig'em !
