Quarterback Conner Weigman named SEC Freshman of the Week
Got that dog in him.
Quarterback Conner Weigman was named the Southeastern Conference’s Co-Freshman of the Week after recording 155 passing yards on 12-of-18 completions and two touchdowns in Saturday’s 38-23 upset win over then-No. 5 LSU. Weigman shares the honor with Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson.
This is Weigman’s first — of hopefully many — SEC POTW honors of his career.
Under his direction, the Aggie offense turned in their most productive outing of the season as they posted 429 total yards for only the fifth time and converted on 10-of-15 third-down attempts. Weigman also orchestrated A&M’s best opening drive of the season, a 15-play march that lasted just under eight minutes and ended with a 10-yard rushing touchdown by Devon Achane.
In the process, the five-star signal caller jumped out to an efficient start, completing his first seven passing attempts, including back-to-back 12- and 18-yard passes to Moose Muhammad. His connection with Muhammad would later result in two show-stopping grabs — the first a one-handed snatch in the end zone followed by a similar catch in the fourth quarter for 39 yards under tight coverage.
Needing a response after the Tigers tied the game at 10-10 in the second quarter, the Aggies were faced with third down after struggling to break through on the ground at LSU’s 3-yard line. Like a true veteran QB, Weigman delivered an answer as he drifted back under pressure and lobbed a touchdown pass to Donovan Green to retake the lead heading into halftime.
His unwavering confidence undoubtedly provided a boost of energy for the team as they pulled off their third top-15 win of the year while scoring a season-high 38 points. And perhaps above all else, the Aggies erased LSU’s playoff hopes by doing so.
“Sometimes managing a game is throwing for 400 yards. Sometimes it's throwing for 150 and being highly efficient and throwing touchdowns and being great on third down and doing the things you got to do,” A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said of Weigman postgame. “Numbers don't dictate wins. Situations dictate wins and knowing how to play and how to win and how to grow as a quarterback. He's a very intelligent young man.”
Officially concluding his rookie campaign with eight touchdowns and zero interceptions, Weigman’s future in Aggieland looks nothing short of promising.
