Expect Jimbo Fisher's offense to come around, whenever that may be

Count on coach Jimbo Fisher to repair Texas A&M’s broken offense. Expect him to find ways to routinely score 30 points or more. Know he will because he’s done it previously.

Remember: Just two seasons ago, Fisher’s offense averaged 32.6 points.

The Aggies' stagnant offense will eventually begin to flow. It’s just a matter of time.

But time in itself is a cause for concern. How much time will it take? Another game? Another month? Another season?

The 2020 season might be an example of what’s to come for A&M, and that’s both good and bad.

En route to going 9-1 that year, the Aggies exceeded 30 points in six of 10 games.

They got off to a rough start against Vanderbilt and only managed 20 against LSU in a rainstorm. But overall, it was a productive offense.

However, that offense also had four senior starters on the offensive line and a senior quarterback in Kellen Mond.

In 17 games since, the Aggies have managed just 24 points or less in 10 games.

Jasen Vinlove/USA Today Sports
QB Kellen Mond guided the Aggies to an Orange Bowl championship in 2020 as A&M averaged 32.6 points per game.

To be fair, A&M did score 41 against Alabama last season (seven came via a kickoff return). Other than that, the Aggies have scored more than 24 points against Kent State, New Mexico, Missouri, South Carolina, Prairie View and Sam Houston.

That seems to indicate A&M can only consistently score 30 points or more in seasons with senior-dominated lines and a senior quarterback. Maximum experience is apparently needed to grasp Fisher’s supposedly complicated offensive system.

Aggie fans have become increasingly disillusioned with Fisher’s offense.

At this point, some frustrated Aggies seemingly would welcome Urban Meyer as head coach, Art Briles as offensive coordinator and Bobby Petrino as quarterbacks coach. And if you can name a derelict offensive line coach … they would be accepted, too.

Of course, that’s an exaggeration, but there is no doubt Fisher — who had been wildly popular among the Aggie populace — is now being questioned.

He isn’t questioned as a head coach. Most Aggies appear to still fully support him in that role.

Rather, they want him to relinquish play-calling duties and bring in an offensive coordinator to update the offense.

Yet, Fisher adamantly maintains that A&M’s offensive problems are not a product of a flawed system.

“The plays are there,” he said after a 42-24 loss to Mississippi State last week. “We’ve just got to execute, and we’ve got to coach them better.

“That system is the same system a lot of people use. The plays are there.”

“We have to give them the confidence and the knowledge and educate them and coach them well to make sure they’re in the right space and doing the right thing consistently in practice and allow it to go to the game. We’ll get it.”
- A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher

Those plays just aren’t being made. Again, why not?

Fisher’s stance is that the offensive unit — which includes a junior, three sophomores and a redshirt freshman on the line — just has not gelled.

“It hasn’t all clicked yet,” Fisher said. “We have to give them the confidence and the knowledge and educate them and coach them well to make sure they’re in the right space and doing the right thing consistently in practice and allow it to go to the game.

“We’ll get it.”

When? Next season? Should A&M expect to struggle until linemen and quarterbacks have three years in the system?

If that proves to be the case, it would stand to reason A&M will field a championship-caliber offense in only one season in three or four.

Obviously, that wasn’t the plan when A&M brought in Fisher. He’s paid handsomely to field teams that consistently challenge for championships, not for one which might occasionally rise up.

Maybe the Aggies will rise up on Saturday against Alabama like they did a year ago.

Maybe all those plays supposedly so close to being made will be executed correctly.

Maybe A&M will avoid turnovers.

Maybe the Aggies' penalties will be eliminated.

And maybe — hopefully — the Aggies won’t have to wait until seniors fill the starting lineup for all that to happen.

Right now, the verdict is it takes veterans to run fishers offense. But in a world of getting five star talent to come here that expects to play immediately or transfer, that has to change.

Excellent article Olin and dead-on. Jimbo is a great recruiter and ambassador, but his offense is… offensive.

Offense has shown no improvement this year. We'll see what happens Saturday night.
Fisher needs to blow up his offensive staff similar to Ryan Day did to the defensive staff
at Ohio State after last year. Imagine losing 2 games and blowing up your staff.
We should settle for nothing less.
Gig 'em!

We are one of the youngest teams in Division 1 college football. It takes time to gel. We will continue to improve each like we have every year with Jumbo except last year. Be patient Ags. It will happen sooner than you think.

An article filled with hope and "maybe". What's that phrase about wishing in one hand and doing something else in the other?

good offenses evolve over time and are always tweaking… jimbo is running the same plays as he did 5-10 years ago, and thinks if "they simply execute the plays will work".

and the biggest joke going is when jimbo or anyone else says "oh this offense is so complicated, it takes a while to learn"… this offense is the definition of vanilla compared to others.

I concur. Done with hope, prayers and wishes.

Jimbo is a A-hole if he does not see himself in the mirror.

New age of NIL. Young players demand to play immediately. Counterintuitive to Jimbo's 20+ year old philosphies as OC. Time to grow up Jimbo and get with the modern age of Div I football.

Totally agree. Olin. I'm disappointing in your view. 16(?) true freshmen, 6 of 7 redshirt freshmen??
Foster misses the first 2 games. Bad snaps both games.
Rosters loaded with young talent. Sorry. I think you're missing it. We've been inexperienced w/o a leader (yet) at Qb. Staffs working their butts off. Offense : timing off.
Defense: freshmen with lots of talent but poor technique in this league. Going forward we'll be fine.
Lighten up.

No kidding. THAT's the problem … the biggest issue that needs to be addressed. Jimbo's delusional mindset. Same mindset. Same classic underachievement. Why can he get that?

Since Coach Fisher has been recruiting for 5 years, why is there no depth on the team?

Jimbos offense needs AN execution. Not SOME execution AN execution.

"We've just got to execute, and we've got to coach them better.

Aggies have been patient while coach has been building his program. So how long are we supposed to wait?

What has coach asked for, that he did not get? We're young? He just figured this out in September? We have injuries? So does everyone else. Staff is not coaching them up? The head coach hired them. Three or four of them will get dismissed soon but are they the blame? Players are the blame? His staff signed them with his approval. Not enough money? Are you kidding me? Players can't figure out how to execute? Really?

Someone prove me wrong...please.

What about our D? A flawed strategy. Our opponents run down our throats. 3rd and long we give up a first down. We do not blitz and expect the coverage to hold for 5 seconds while the QB finds and open receiver. Just dumb.

You are expected to wait until 2031 when Fisher's contract runs out.

Having a senior QB and four senior OL at the same time is a rare occurrence. If that's what it takes to have a halfway decent offense, then it's not the personnel that's the problem

I posted almost this exact sentence a couple weeks ago! Olin indeed reads the zoo!

He's a stubborn arrogant man. It's a fatal flaw. His offense is antiquated. He won't take us anywhere. Not even an SEC title. Hope the big money Ags are ready to pony up some $$ to get rid of him.

An incredible amount of medical retirements starting with Like Matthews.

There's been a few good threads discussing the why.

No doubt that durkin is clueless as well. He's got alot of young players and for that I'll give him a small break but not even trying to blitz miss state was a strategic blunder. Even when he saw that dropping 8 wasn't working. He stuck with it.

Good article. "Maybe" was used so often I thought I was reading a summary of an "Ancient Aliens" TV episode.
