After a 9OT snoozefest, I'm pretty confident that the new OT rules aren't an improvement. So my question: what are the RIGHT OT rules?

I figure the hallmarks of a good OT are:
1. Give fair chances to both teams
2. Bring the game to a rapid conclusion
3. Determine a winner
4. Simplicity/consistency

When time runs out in the 4th, a tie is a tie. Will affect final rankings.

My recommendation is for all OT periods to begin as 1st & goal from the 25. No PATs allowed (must go for 2). Both teams get 1 series in each OT with the order swapping between each OT. And that's it.

Have the 5 Olineman kick extra points... PK style

Settle it with rock, paper, scissors at the 50 between the two head coaches.

What was wrong with the overtime we had?

One game every decade + went as long as that absolute crap show that happened today

Just admit it was a stupid decision and change it back.

Never heard a single person really complain about the overtime. Until now.

look at play efficiency.

Each team has 21 points, but Team A got 21 points from 40 snaps, while Team B had 52 snaps. Team A wins.

So you punish teams for having the ball longer and running more plays? That's a really bad idea.

Tbh I think the current OT rules are fair, and give both teams an equal chance at a W.

I was at the game when we beat lsu at the conclusion of 7 OT's and I'm still not sure that I didn't incur permanent heart damage.

Yes. Only if they don't do anything with it.

I think the new OT rules are fine. The Illinois game was an anomaly.

They went 5 OTs in a row without a score on one single play meaning it was game on the line with one play 7 total times when you include the 8th and 9th

That sounds worse for your heart tbh

All 11 players line up on the 20. First drop kick through wins.

What was wrong with what we had before?

What we had before was definitely better than whatever that was with PSU and IL.

Supposedly changed for player safety.

You can't deny what we saw today took far less time than our 7OT monster. The players looked like they could barely walk to the locker room after. Today was totally different, only 7 plays off/def after the 2OT is a huge change

It also distills the game into goal-line plays. Which highly favors a team with a power run game.

This current OT configuration didn't work for this game because the offenses weren't good. The reason the score was tied (anemic offenses) wasn't also going to be the key to breaking the tie.

A 1st and goal from the 25 would at least keep the field goal kickers on the game. Then there'd be 4 possible scoring outcomes to each series (0, 3, 6, or 8). When it's just 0 or 2, the chance to keep tying up is pretty high.

This is absolutely the type of high-level thinking I came to this board to receive! Perfect solution!

They should play regular rules but each team is limited to players who have not played during the first 4 quarters.

After the 3rd OT, whoever can spit the farthest wins.

I've always wanted to just use an improved version of the NFL version. Each team gets a possession, regardless of what the other team does. If Team A scores a TD on their opening drive, Team B still gets a shot. If still tied after the 1st chance for each team, then next score wins.

1st OT 1st and 15 from 25
2nd OT 2nd and 10 from 30
3rd OT 3rd and 5 from 35
4th OT 4th and 2 from 32
5th OT on trade FGs from 42 yards until a miss

Yes, you just play regular football. TD on first possession wins it. FG for first team followed by TD for second wins it. FG wins it on third total possession.

Up to 2 OT chances from the 30, must go for 2 on TDs

After that, it's a tie

I liked the overtime format, I'd like to see it shootout style, each team gets 5 1 play possessions from the 3. You can kick the point for 1 or td for 2. And just set it up in each end zone in an IGYG format

And if no clear winner emerges from all of this, a two-man sack race will be held on consecutive Sundays until a champion can be crowned.

Go back to the old rules except start at the 40 instead of the 25. Set a maximum number of OT's. Unless it's a conference championship game or playoff game. This alternating 2 pt conversions is ludicrous.
