The beginnings of the birth of modern A&M football under a great coach. 3-8, 5-6, 8-3, 10-2, 10-2, 8-4 before being shown the door at mid season the following year.

Very cool was hoping to see my dad he played on this team. I did see Dusek who was my dads roommate and who I was named after. If the poster comes accross anymore from this era please share.

I knew those guys fairly well. Lex James, Bubba, Brad Dusek (great Aggie), Mark Green (transferred out).

Alvin Bowers ended up at FB, Brad went back to defense. Homer May was TE and a good one.

Heard all those names growing up as a kid. Dad was starting defensive end on those teams from 70-73. Pops always said if they could ever have found an offense they could have been great but just never happened. Another great on those teams Grady Herman.

Why was Bellard let go? I think A&M had what, one winning season between Bryant leaving and Bellard being hired?

I vaguely remember watching Mr. Peppermint in the late 60's-early 70's in Gainesville TX.

Good find, OP.

Thanks for sharing.

I think it was a combination of going 8-4 after a 10-2 season and frustration with his conservative offense. Bellard actually resigned after hearing rumblings of lack of support from the administration.

I'm sure someone on here knows more about it than I but my understanding is it was a number of things: 1) Change of president to one that was less supportive 2) an OC that was politicking the new president to get the job 3) losses were few but some were devastating particularly the loss to hogs in 75. Of course no one seemed to acknowledge the loss of our starting QB the week before. Instead the drumbeat began "it was the offense" with the OC being the conductor. In 77 we got blown out by Michigan on national TV then in mid 78 we lost to UH 33-0 (also the halftime score). It was the last straw. Unfortunately we lost a great coach and class guy and went to pot until Sherrill got here 4 years later.

that was cool to see. Emory Bellard did a lot of good things for us. So close to a National Championship in 75!

I found this at the SMU Jones Film account on YouTube. @smujonesfilm on Twitter. They have a lot of '60s & '70s news footage from the D/FW area.

A couple of weeks ago, they had footage and interviews from the Miss Hot Pants contest that was held after a Texas Rangers game in the '70s.

He actually was not let go. He heard rumors that some "higher-ups" (insert President, BOR etc) were dissatisfied with the offense and were discussing replacing him at the end of the season. He walked in ( around the Baylor game in mid season) and resigned. One rumor I heard was that they wanted him to name an Offensive Co-ordinator. He had just hired Tom Wilson as QB's coach. I don't think Wilson wanted the head coach job (he wanted to be the HC at Tech) but they offered and he took it.

He had some of the states best offensive minds (Gil Bartosh and Chuck Moser) and the world's best Defensive Co-ordinator in Melvin Roberson.

Bellard was a great coach and man.

I remember seeing a few bumper stickers "Make a Memory of Emory". Brutal.

Grady Hoermann(#31) was a good guy. Tough and hard hitting MLB.

Great post that brought back great memories of my sophomore year. I still remember the Jolly Rolly yell practices to which Ralph referred (along with the Tuesday night ones in front of Henderson Hall). Great times

I knew your dad as well. I meet him early in Sept 1971 at some apartments off campus. He was with Lex James. Great guy and very friendly.

One of my roommates has season tickets. I bring my grandson and come down at least once a year for a game. We always camp out at Butch Kamps (one of your dad's teammates) tailgate.

So much good about this thread ... the old news clip, conversation about A&M's effort of hiring such innovative and quality coaches, but especially seeing Jerry Hanes, Mr Peppermint, as a News 8 sports reporter out of Dallas ??? Guess it showed how little A&M was thought of ... sending Mr Peppermint to interview our new head coach.

Grew up watching which ever had the best antenna reception from 100 miles away, Hamilton, Mr Peppermint or Captain Kangaroo.

Had a hard time buying into hiring a coach from tu, on top of that him bringing one of the tu Campbell brothers as an assistant coach. However, Coach Bellard elevated our level of play and our status within the SWC with his offense, recruiting, and quality of coaches.

I was in the first era of shuttle bus drivers on campus, and got to drive Coach Bellard and players from Sbisa to the Bonfire before the '75 Texas game. It was a privilege and quite a memory.

I sat next to Brad in a business class. He was a nice guy. He had a nice career in the NFL as well.
Seems like I had a class with Mark Green as well. I don't recall where he transferred to or if you ever played football again.

I didn't start following Aggie Football until the early 2000's. When I look back on things the school did through the 50's, 60's, and 70's while teams around us like Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas were really establishing themselves, it kinda pisses me off. I think our lack of success over that time in the early years of the modern era really put our program in a hole. After Bryant left in '57 we had ZERO ranked teams over the next 16 seasons. Then Bellard has three consecutive ranked teams and we decide that's not good enough and push him away. It's another 6 years before Sherrill has a ranked squad. Ridiculous.

Gibby also laid vocals on Jesus Built My Hotrod, which is what I remember him for:

As an aside, it's funny how Jourgenson went from Chicagoan to basically an adopted Texan, what with nearly all his music produced here in the millennium.
