My son saw it with his own eyes this past Saturday. My son's high school team - Regents of Austin - was playing McGlothern's, Trinity Christian of Dallas (the team Deion Sanders coaches and where his sons play). There was a minor fracas where from the field Sanders' oldest son yelled some serious smack to the Regents coach. A snap later McGlothern went over to a few Regents players and said, "Hey, I'm sorry about (Sanders Sons Name). I'm not sure what's come over him...". Also during the game McGlothern was lining up near the Regents bench and saw an injured player who didn't suit up just wearing a long sleeve shirt (it was COLD Saturday night). McGlothern saw him and laughed, shaking his head while laughing, saying, "Man, aren't you cold?".

Seems like a nice, level-headed young man. Great player too! He will look good in maroon and white!

* Alas, for the second year in a row, Regents lost to Trinity, 49-24...

Beck is a great coach. Clay is too. Afraid the deck was stacked against the Knights again this year. Great program with people who truly understand the chief end of man.

Nice humble brag on affording to send your kid to Regents. They were in our district for a couple of years when I was in high school ~12 years ago. Nobody could stand them.

That's a double edged humble-brag. We have our kids in private school.

Our costs from PK4 to 12, it ends up being about $225K'ish, depending on inflation and increased costs every year. With multiple kids, it mounts quickly.

Some people think it is insane to spend $500K in 14 years on an education that you can get for free.

I went to public institutions from Kindergarten to Texas A&M. I turned out just fine.

Don't get me wrong. I went to private school in Bryan because the public school option would have been Hearne ISD. I've seen how much the private schools cost in the DFW/Austin?Houston and its starting to get ridiculous. Some are more expensive than going to college.

I see the only benefit of private school being if the public school you would have had to attend is a bottom feeder. When you compare the average public school you are not gaining anything educationally other than possibly just being separated from any struggling kids whether that be academically or behaviorally. If you show up and work your butt off like anything in life you will get a top notch education in public schools. Most of those (not all let me reiterate) sending their kids to private school is an elite status thing.

On the OP's post...do we have a shot at this kid?

private school is only as good as the teachers / academic program...you get bad kids in private school, just like in public school. You get bad and good teachers in private school versus public school.

If you want to look at numbers, homeschoolers fare much better than public or private schoolers on tests like the SAT / ACT. I'm not sure why, but they do. (we don't homeschool by the way).

Plenty of very expensive private schools around my area that are worse in academics than several of the public schools. At the end of the day, it's up to the parents to ensure a positive education for their children....assuming others will do it for you is not the best strategy...although their are many good teachers out there.

Agree....only issue is every person I've met that was home schooled are one of the most socially awkward people I know lol. There's something to be said for the education of being around people too. It can be done homeschooling but too many end up having no social skills.

Weirdest home schooling story I ever came across. When I was at A&M (class of '95) there was an upperclassmen who was home schooled his entire life and was in the Corp, like his dad and granddad.

He was also straight A student in Civil Engineering. Helluva guy.

This isn't the weird part.

The weird part was that he had the strongest, deepest Texas accent I have ever heard...but he had grown
up in the jungles of Brazil where his parents were missionaries.

As a kid he never was in Texas. He wasn't even in America!

Before he got to A&M he had never been there before.

At college he found a wife, got married right after graduation, then went right back, LOL!!!

Austin has a pretty strong home-school community with a lot of group activities.
There are also several good private schools in the area with tuition less than the average amount spent per public school student. The SW Austin private schools are a bit more pricey.
AISD schools (except for LASA) still seem to struggle. Eanes and Round Rock schools are a bit better.

I was home schooled for 5 years (7th -11th), private school 6 years (1st - 6th) and 2 years public school (kindergarten and 12th).

In my experience, homeschooling was the hardest. Mom made sure I did all the work and learned it. Private school was great, much smaller class and made some good friends. Public school was fine other than being around a bunch of lolpoors.

The Trinity Christian School you speak of is in Cedar Hill not Dallas. There is also one in Addison. This school is a good example of a private school not being worth the money. IMO, parents in that area send their kids there simply for status. However, the school has won Tapps Div 2 state two years in a row and is part of the reason that Cedar Hill High School has been down in football. These Charter and Life schools are pilfering talent from some of these suburbs a little at a time.

Most kids actually get their accent from their parents. The odd ones are where, say, Asian or African parents' kids gain the local accent. The counter to that example is chicanos, who usually retain their parents' Latin accent.

Myself for instance, my mom is German-American (many generations back, she has a very thick Texas accent). My dad came up from southern Mexico. I have a very thick Texas accent myself, but even though my dad never us Spanish, my Spanish accent is apparently still so perfectly country Mexican that Latinos from the homeland think I'm fluent. I can barely take an order in Spanish.

I'd disagree with that. I'd say most homeschool kids would be awkward no matter where they went. A lot of times that's why they are home schooled. Sometimes the "social skills" you refer to include bullying and ostracizing the kids that don't fit in.

Most kids are going to be like their parents no matter where they go to school. Odd, normal, whatever.

Any my kids were private school, not Homeschool. Well, homeschool only til 2nd and 4th grade.

I was educated in public high school, but my parents paid tuition because it was out of our district. When I went to private school, it was free because my mom taught there.
