need to feel like they still have to explain overtime rules? How many years have we been in this format?

Can you explain which rules you are referencing? Asking for a friend.

I don't know. Why do the refs still tell us off-sides is a 5 yard penalty and holding is 10? And why do they call it taking a dump when your not really taking it anywhere?

Thought I'd start another mini-offseason topic.

True. In fact, you're leaving it somewhere.

In College Football, OT rules suddenly change to Canadian Football rules. It really is confusing.

Someone posted here asking why a muffed punt can't be advanced by the team that recovered the fumble.

Never overestimate the knowledge of the regular football fan.

you'd be surprised how unintelligent some football players are.

For example, in the first year of the playoff, some players thought #1 played #3 and 2 played 4.

Another example, some defensive backs choose to launch themselves at the heads of receivers who have already dropped the ball so that they get ejected from the game for targeting... again. (looking at you, Dono)

not a fumble, a muff. if it were a fumble it could be advanced.
so your post is ironic.

Semantics.

Are you supposed to dive for a fumble, a muff or both?

Same reason the TV announcers always say it has to be "indisputable evidence" to overturn the call on the field.

The college football overtime rules were implemented in 1996.

Prior to that, it was possible for a 7-0 team to tie with a one win SMU.

Why does Burger King have the best smelling food when you pass the restaurant, yet the worst tasting food when you eat it?

Real answer? You are a minority. The majority of football fans are casual watchers and need reminders. Most never played a down in their life. They know when the ball is being successfully passed, and when it is successfully being run. They know when a player makes a touchdown.

Same goes for anything in life. People know enough to get by and be happy. You want to really shake your head, try volunteering for an election campaign.

Why do they call it a touchdown if you run over the goal line?

Why is it a called a gridiron if the field is made of grass?

Why are they called tailbacks if they don't actually have tails?

Why is the quarterback called a quarterback? Does he carry spare change?

Are halfbacks called halfbacks 'cause they don't have a full spine?

Why are they called downs when the goal is to not down the ball?

Why are they called cornerbacks when they play in the open field?

Why is it called a huddle and not a consultation?

Why are special teams usually anything but?

Why is it called a field goal when you never actually field the goal?

Because some penalties are declined or they offset and he is essentially telling you what is being enforced. It is also a check and balance on yardage markoff.

In addition, holding has a provision for 15 yards.

Quote:

Holding and Use of Hands or Arms: Defense

ARTICLE 4. a. Defensive players may use hands and arms to push, pull, ward off or lift offensive players:

...

PENALTY [c-e]10 or 15 yards [S38, S42, S43 or S45].

The 15 yard reference is to a personal foul but one described in this section of the rules.

Speaking of airlines, why is it a 'near miss' when 2 planes almost collide?

Why does a plane land on a runway, but you walk down a jetway?

What is racecar spelled backwards?
