On October 2, 2004 Alabama lost to South Carolina 20-3. They have not lost by three scores (by 17+) in any game since.

That absurdly long streak is by far the longest in college football. For example, LSU has the second-longest streak in the SEC, and it only dates back to September 16, 2017 (@MSU).

The last coach to beat Alabama by more than 14 points was Nick Saban.

Only Nick Saban can beat Nick Saban...makes sense.

Saban didn't coach at South Carolina. What am I missing?

The Bama dynasty has gotten out of hand. It's like Saban is playing Dynasty mode in NCAA Football on his PS2 but in real life. At some point he's gotta misplace his memory card, or the power supply has to burn out, or his mom sells his console so he can focus on homework. That's what it took for me.

Losing by 3 scores = 17 points.

In November 2004 Alabama lost by 16 to LSU, which is technically a two score game.

The loss to Nick Saban could be by 15 or 16 points. Thus making all statements valid. The more you know.

It's all Drew Brees fault. After injuring his shoulder and leaving San Diego he was going to sign with the Dolphins until their doctors did not clear him through a physical thus the Saints picking him up. Which then led to the Dolphins signing washed up Dante Culpepper.

If Brees is cleared by the Dolphin doctors they probably win more games and Saban sticks around longer, in turn never going to Bama.

If we had any kind of defense in 2013 we would have won by a lot.

Somewhat related I was looking into what defines a blue blood the other day and obvious one is Bama is and has always been the gold standard. So far ahead of everyone else.

I was surprised by a few teams and us actually. Looking at this from a lens of sustained success means minimal losing seasons and more than 16 10 win seasons (based on the average of top teams), and then looking at peak seasons (natty) minus worst seasons. Miami is quite an anomaly.

Seems to me we need another 6 10 win seasons and a natty to join the ranks of traditional blue bloods all hailing from the SEC and Big10

The timeline is '73 when scholarship limits were put in place to last season. Used that parameter since a) becomes harder to win as talent is more widespread across teams and b) not all schools have played for 100+ years

Trying to make sense of your seasonal math... if that is starting from '73, shouldn't there be ~34 seasons worth of statistics data?

Only looking at seasons below .500 and seasons teams had >10wins

USCw 2001-2009 was heading this way before Pete Carroll left. His teams wee on a similar roll though he left after only eight years. I wonder what that would have looked like if he had stayed.

And then they will immediately suck? Saban will win a natty or 2 from his grave...

The bama problem is here for a decade more minimum...

Unfortunately, Saban already left college football for the NFL and came back. Also unfortunate he doesn't have an alma mater capable of drawing him away.
