SIAP, but looks like McCollum got caught doing something dumb after ULM

McCollumn Arrested

TLDR Version: Drving like a maniac on campus, tried to outrun a bike cop leaving the ULM game. It would stink to have a guy in the OL rotation suspended during Bama week for something like this.

Are we really wanting to kick a kid out of school for reckless driving and not stopping for a bicycle cop? He probably thought it was a rent a cop or something. Now if drugs or alcohol are involved that is a different story, but it didn't say that anywhere.

Bicycle cop. I'm not stopping either

He was probably driving reckless trying to avoid the bike nerds.

Can't say TAMU police give special treatment to football players....

He is McCoy's backup. We may have no center for the Bama game.

According to Jimbo they are optimistic that McCoy will be ready for this weekend...

It sucks, but I think we should suspend/punish accordingly. I don't want the rules bent for a football player, it should be an honor and a privilege to play collegiate football.

Maybe the next person will think twice and do the right thing if we set the precedent now. Even if that means we run with our 3rd option at center and hurt our offense, everyone should know that their actions on and off the field have consequences.

Your team needs you to do the right thing.

Haha, a normal student would likely pay zero consequences for this. No suspension at all. It wouldn't even be known about other than their parents. Charges will be reduced to nothing

Reckless Driving is the same level offense as Driving While Intoxicated (Class B Misdemeanor) -- putting other people in danger of serious bodily injury or death is never a good idea.

Bicycle cop or not, Evading in a Vehicle creates an unnecessary risk of harm to the general public. Even if you think you can outrun a bicycle, you're not likely to outrun the officer's radio.

Evading arrest or detention is a 3rd degree felony, punishable by 2 to 10 years in the Texas Department of Correction, and a $10,000 fine, if the person flees while in a vehicle. It is a felony of the 2nd degree if someone dies as a result of evading in a vehicle.

Not sure how I feel about that. Besides. If you have money you'll never have problems. Ever. You can buy your way out of murder so #doesntmatter

"driving wrecklessly" is a judgement call. Article didn't say he was speeding or that he ran a stop sign. Just that he was accelerating quickly. Said he was driving recklessly in an area around pedestrians (j-walking in the road?) and presumably an illegally-parked vehicle since there isn't any legal street parking in that area.

Not going to say that kids don't do stupid things, but the reasons given for his arrest seem like they will be difficult to prove in court. Not sure what police bike lights look like, but I imagine they look a lot like the flashing strobe front light on non-police bikes. Hope there's video somewhere to show what actually happened so we don't have to take an officer's word for it.

"Evading in a Vehicle creates an unnecessary risk of harm to the general public"

Then write down the plate number and radio it in, don't chase someone for something trivial.

Exactly. Too many officers make BAD judgement calls. Usually based on their opinion of you, car you drive , or actions while dealing with them.

We need to pay officers more and require more education. I want to get shot by someone with a degree. Not a diploma. Really would help. I'll pay more to get more education. Like DPS.
