From TexAgs Sponsor, David Gardner's Jewelers:

Introducing the Tudor Black Bay GMT
For the very first time, Tudor & Rolex coordinated the release of almost identical watches. Both companies, founded by German watchmaker Hans Wilsdorf, released their own version of a GMT at Baselworld 2018. Tudor's Black Bay GMT is the first of its kind, sporting a distinctive burgundy and blue bezel and a new GMT function that establishes local time without losing sight of the time in two other time zones.

Which one do you like better?

I still have an old Rolex with the Pepsi Bezel, so I guess I'm sentimental towards it.

It wouldn't surprise me that the Tudor might actually be a better watch.

Tudor is a great under the radar watch but I prefer my Rolex over my Tudor. Can't go wrong with either one.

Neither. Tag Heuer. Sport Link Automatic Chronometer. Had it for over 20 years.

DG used to be a Tag dealer. Those were the days.

Thanks, but the portable computer I carry in my pocket has a clock on it.

I love my Tag Heuer Formula One Chronograph.

I'm a great fan of GT endurance racing and watch companies like Tag, Rolex and Tudor have always been huge sponsors of the sport.

Tag Heur sponsered Steve McQueen for Gulf's Porsche team at the 1970 Sebring.

As a fanboy I couldnt resist.

Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting.

I'm not a fan of the pepsi bezel.

Submariner or Day Date are where it's at.

I really like that Tudor finally went with an in house movement, but now the Black Bay sits higher on my wrist than a Rolex Sea Dweller! I still want the BB GMT but wish it had a thinner case. It will be very successful regardless. The new Rolex GMT Pepsi is stunning, jubilee bracelet and all. I will have one when they eventually start to show up and the ADs go through their wait lists. Nothing holds value like a Rolex but I do think Tudor will hold more value than Tag, breitling or Omega going forward. They are fantastic timepieces and will become more popular as Rolex continues with their price increases. I want both!

Not many regrets in life but one was not buying that Rolex GMT when I was stationed in Thailand in 1973. They were retailing for about $300 or $350. Could have gotten one there for $150. Young lieutenant thought, "$150 for a watch!!!?" Ended up with a Seiko for $50 that was retailing for $150 stateside.

Aw man...that watch would now sell for well over 20k with all original parts and lume. Problem is Rolex had a tendency to replace hands, faded dials, bezel inserts and such and re-lume the tritium during servicing. I love the way those GMTs from the '60s and '70s have aged. Nothing prettier than an all original 1675 with a faded pepsi bezel and the old tritium faded to a warm cream color. I'd love to have that or a red sub or double Red Sea Dweller....or all three!

I may be wrong but don't think there was a knock off market in 1973. They were sold through the BX and the GMT was very popular in the Air Force since aviation is based on Greenwich Mean Time. $150 was a great deal and not out of line if retail was in the $300 - 350 range. To put in perspective, total monthly pay for a 1LT was $1127.

Base pay - 712
Flight pay - 125
Housing allow - 195
Family separation allow - 30 (my favorite, $1 per day for the extra cost of maintaining a family in States)
Combat pay - 65 ($2 per day for getting shot at)

So spending $150 for a watch was 13% of monthly income while I had a wife and new son to support back in Texas

FWIW, I bought a DateJust many years later. Think I paid around $2200.

My FiL bought a Submariner at Gitmo in 1968 for $125. At the time he was making around $150 month, but didn't have anything to spend it on being deployed. It was his daily wear watch up until last year.

He had it appraised for insurance, $14,000 because it's 100% original and he has all the paperwork and even a few brochures from the BX when he bought it. It is still in very good condition.
