ESiPN reporting Sumlin taking Mazone with him to AZ. Why would he do that given the lack of success they had at A&M? Just for the PAC experience?

Mazone made Sumlin a lot of money without doing any work. Why change what's working?
He won't be able to smugly shrug off questions about an inept offense if he doesn't bring along his incompetent assistant.
Other than maybe knowledge of Pac 12 and recruiting ties I have no idea. The dude is a moron (I'll let yyou decide which one Im talking about).

Maybe part of it is Mazzone doesn't have a job right now and Sumlin doesn't have to try and poach another staff.

You're assuming anybody asks him questions about inept offense. Nobody, including TexAgs, ever asked Sumlin tough questions while he was here. I doubt anyone will do it at Arizona either.

Mazzone's system theoretically works well if you have a QB who makes fast, accurate reads and throws (e.g. Rosen) and/or is enough of a running threat to make the option part of RPO realistic (Trevor Knight). See Stephen McGee's film room for how an NFL QB would do it.
Rosen is one of the few QBs who could do this straight out of HS, and college football inherently has high personnel turnover (even aside from injury).
The finesse style probably does work better in the PAC-12. It's based more on using movement and positioning to create gaps which is why our offense failed in power situations.
OCs need to be able to adapt their systems to the QB's strengths, and I think Mond, the OL, and RBs would have all benefited if they had let Kellen rely more on his legs this year to create some uncertainty for the defenses.

Regarding Mazzone's talent ... maybe internet coaches have no clue about judging a game plan or coaching.

The Qb at Arizona is a great runner. Not a good passer.
Sumlin started trying to change our offensive system and recruiting 3 years ago. He realized we needed to be more physical. It never worked out because it is not his nature to coach that way.
