not saying he does but if fisher wanted to retain say chavis, would chavis have to stay or else break his contract...or is there generally a clause in there about it being contingent on the current head coach?

Chavis' contract expires at the end of the year.

he would get a one for 2018 if Fisher wants to keep him

Assistants are usually tied to the head coach. If the head man is fired the assistant are automatically let go as well. Very rarely do assistants have a contact that is not tied to the head coach. Usually when a head coach is fired the assistants contracts are no longer valid. It actually helps if assistants are fired because then they get paid for another 6 months. If the head coach is fired they don't get anything else. This is all from a coach I work with that has won a national championship coaching at the d1 level. He has not been in college since around 2009 so maybe it has changed since then.

This is not totally correct. Assistant coaches are sometimes up at the end of the year but not always. Some assistants may be on a longer term contract and are owed that money.

It is becoming standard for highly valued coordinators to have guaranteed contracts not tied to the HC's tenure.

Why we got Chavis from LSU. Alleva was insisting that his new contract (at the time) was voided if Miles was fired.

At A&M, Chavis' contract was guaranteed whether Sumlin was fired or not. It just happened that his three year contract expires after this season. If he is not retained by the new coach, A&M owes him nothing further contractually.

Like I said, this is from a coach I work with that has spent 25 yrs at the college level. He has not been at that level since somewhere around 2009 so it might have changed a bit. What it comes down too is what did he negotiate as the terms of his contract. The big this is where his contract is separate from the the head coach or not. If it is separate, then it depends on what is in his contract but that is not very common.

All depends on the wording in his contract.
