In the early 70s, placekicker Pat McDermott, a 5'9" soccer style shoe-less kicker who had never played football before college as a walk-on, was the leading scorer for the Aggies for at least one of the seasons he played, ...a place kicker as the leading scorer for the season!!!!!..
one of the few bright spots in a dark time for Aggie football, he is remembered for more than one 50 yard plus field goals in games.... this was before any of Hall of Fame Aggie kickers
From Sports Illustrated Nov. 1, 1971
"Texas A&M's 5'9" kicking specialist, Pat McDermott, booted a 53 yard field goal in the last quarter to lift the Aggies to a 10-9 win over Baylor."
I might say that he was not a big guy, and put his life on the line every time he went out onto the field... sat next to me in a freshman class, a real student athlete, the only football player I had in any of my classes at A&M (not many football players took classes with Microbiology majors)
