Silly, we all know from hard experience in the SWC and the BDF what the hardest play to defend against is. We've seen it against LSU and Auburn as well. It's this one:
Bad Referee Call (perhaps bribed)
Sharpshooter

You are all incorrect. The hardest play to defend is the "chunk it up in the vicinity of Mike Evans and let him jump" play. Indefensible.

Point being, and I've said this for years, that the hardest route to defend is a come-back when the CB's back is turned.

Almost every CB will have his back turned at some point when you are running a vertical route in man coverage.

When the receiver stops and comes back, he will almost ALWAYS have a huge advantage on the defender.

It's time we start using this a bit more.

How did it take three posts and eleven minutes for somebody to post this? Zoo is getting soft.

A&M pulled that play back in the day. I'll see if I can find the newspaper article that described it. I have it in hard copy at home, somewhere, but maybe I can find it online.

Supposedly, it was pulled after the Ags got a 15 yard penalty. The QB went up to the line, stood there a second, then yelled at the ref "Wait a minute, that's just a 5 yard penalty!"

He then said to the center, "Give me the ball."

Then, just like the gif, he started through the line, counting off ten steps. Just before he was done, he took off. In those days, that was about the only way we could score.

The article had two or three other plays, one was a split end hide-out play, that has now been largely outlawed, and another was what they called the Aggie Spread, where the linemen were10 or 15 yards apart. That last play, in modified form, still shows up now and then.

Now, that I think about it, it may be a Texas Monthly article. I'll look.

But in any case, this stuff makes football fun.

When you win.

Sounds great, now all we need are receivers that are:
Quick & Strong enough to beat man coverage.
Fast enough to get the CB chasing.
Good route runners to not tell their breaks.

Also, we need a QB that has good anticipation to throw before the receiver breaks and he has to be accurate.

This comes from the pre-snap read. QB must recognize which slot receiver will be uncovered and get the ball out QUICK.

Hardest play to defend besides being athletically superior and running iso over and over is the "mesh" play with a semi-mobile QB. Where two inside slot receivers run crossing routes 2-3 yards deep across the face of the LBs and stop anywhere b/t 2-3 yards within (inside or out, typically outside) the hash marks, flashing their numbers to the QB for a half a second. After flashing they continue their routes to the side lines. If play is extended they turn up field when hitting the side line.

This stresses the LBs more than a well timed play action. A RB could stay for pass protection and after 2 seconds flash to flat or stay in pp. the outside receivers clear safety's and corners with a post or vertical. Thoughts? Flame on.

Well, first off, the WR routes you described aren't exactly how they work on the Mesh play, not to mention, the Mesh play is expensive in terms of practice and doesn't have near the success as other pass concepts.

Disagree, well coached zone coverage team takes care of it every time. Hardest plays to defend right now are the power read play series. Power Read, Toss Read, Shovel Power Read etc.
