Aggies, I thought it would be a shame to let news of Dr. Henry Pearson of Athens, Texas, dying on March 9, pass without comment.

He played football for Bear Bryant at A&M, which he let me know very soon after he learned I graduated from "that school in Austin." I asked him many questions about "the Bear." He was loyal to A&M and made it proud with his research success.

I am very privileged to have known him, albeit briefly.

Quote:

The family requests that visitation be observed Tuesday at Hixson Brothers, Pineville, LA from 2:00 p.m. until shortly before time of service.

A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church of Athens, Texas Saturday, March 18, 2017 at 2:00 p.m.

Dr. Pearson, 83, of Athens, Texas passed away, Thursday, March 9, 2017 in Athens, Texas.
Dr. Pearson received degrees from Associates Degree, Blinn Junior College; Bachelor's Degree, Texas A&M University; Master's Degree, Texas A&M University; and his PhD, Utah State University
He was a member of many organizations and many service organizations, First Baptist Church Athens, Texas, Rotary Club, Athens, Texas, Society of Range Management, Society of American Foresters and numerous religious and charitable organizations.

Dr. Henry Pearson spent his professional career as a research scientist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the U.S Forest Service. He wrote or participated in hundreds of publications and presentations. As an eminent and international scientist, he traveled to many countries assisting in their agricultural development. Dr. Pearson was largely responsible for starting the Southern Forest Heritage Museum in Long Leaf, Louisiana.

Henry had a lifelong interest in college age students. He served as a volunteer Baptist Student Director at Northern Arizona College, a trustee at Grand Canyon College and worked with students in his local church for many years.

In retirement he taught at Trinity Valley Community College, served as a hospice chaplain, participated in numerous mission trips, and continued his interest in agriculture with a pine straw business.
Henry had a passion for sports. He received a basketball scholarship to Texas A&M, but chose to play football at Blinn Junior College, lettering in four sports. Then in the U.S. Army, Henry was selected to play football, where he was the top receiver in Europe. He returned to Texas A&M to play for the legendary Paul "Bear" Bryant in 1956 through 1958. He enjoyed a lifetime of competing in any and every sport well into his seventies. His goal in sports and life was to give all, to play hard regardless of the outcome.

Henry was characterized by a joy of life and love of people. He lived a life of impeccable integrity and determination despite all obstacles. His love and attention to his family was his priority. For 58 years he set a daily example of true sacrificial love in his devotion to his beautiful wife Dorothy. He was gracious in finances, relationships, time and work - in all areas of life, always giving beyond what was asked. He walked humbly and faithfully with his God and considered his athletic ability, intellect, and success a blessing from God, seeking to honor the Lord Jesus Christ in all he did. He was a great man who thoroughly enjoyed his life.
Dr. Henry Pearson, RIP
