They ask several:

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football-recruiting/2017/2/16/14611480/texas-am-recruit-tom-herman-kevin-sumlin-houston-2018

Quote:

Of the state's 47 recruits rated four- or five-stars, 30 signed with out-of-state programs.

When has it not been this way???

A&M and texas should both be dominate programs like tOSU, USC, FSU, and Bama but there is some kind of mystic about leaving Texas to go play for a "Big Time Program".

My whole life...

Because other programs have been historically better than sip and Texas A&M at football. Especially in the recent past.

Not to mention, the weather in the late summer and early fall is better in almost every other place they could choose to play.

Also, bagmen.

Dude, nowhere in Alabama, Louisiana, Florida or anywhere in the south is the weather any better at any point in the summer. Neither is Oklahoma, and the winters there suck donkey sack.

Ohio may be a smidge better in early summer, but then winter hits and it becomes hell frozen over.

A .634 winning pct isn't much better than .480? By comparison that's about the same difference as the Cubs and the Pirates this year and the Pirates finished 25 games behind the Cubbies.

Some of that history is fairly recent. Take LSU for example. Up until about 2003 they had about the same history as we did.

Chicken/egg...if these kids had any state pride they'd take their competitive nature to a state school and make them better and put them in the National Championship discussion. Bunch of front runners...

The article notes that 18 of the top 22 left the state, but then went on to add that A&M signed two other top players who had transferred to IMG, so... win? That could be 3 of the 25 or so, depending on service, as many as LSU and tOSU, per the article.

Small victories though, it's still disheartening to see so many Texans going out of state.

UT has been bad and we have been just OK. Add to that everyone says Sumlin will be fired next year.
Also, their parents can see every game on TV now.

I was trying to point out how ridiculous the author was in writing this comparison.

The State of Texas has experienced a serious economic hit in the oil patch the past few years so there is less alumni money to pay recruits to stay and play college football for universities in the Lone Star State.

A lot of these kids are not "Texans" - but rather came here from rust belt migration, Katrina refugees, etc.

"The grass is greener" effect is very real when coaches from other states/programs tell how much their programs are better - real or not...

The intense heat/humidity of College Station is a drawback for many.

Many kids do not have the IQ to attend A&M, and if they do Stanford, Rice, the Ivy's, etc., are all waiting...
For those who are not good students, bordering states offer an easier path - especially with more "easy courses" than A&M to offer prospective athletes.

A&M has a distinct conservative culture with many traditions from a military background. This is a turnoff for many kids who prefer to be "progressive" in their ideology. Not everyone is cut out to conform and be "an Aggie".

Let's face it - Bryan-College Station is great for families and raising kids - but for single college age kids, there really isn't a whole lot to do... and city life on weekends to Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth beckon every weekend.

Etcetera...

IMHO, there are too many in state schools in power 5 programs, and when these programs recruit against each other in so doing they rip the other Texas schools so bad to try and win recruiting battles. This in turn causes a lack of state pride amongst Texas high school recruits

Seems like negative recruiting is ultra vicious in this state. Other Texas schools would much rather the kids go out of state than to fellow schools in Texas

In other states, state pride is strong because there are only 1 or 2 big in state schools

People make decisions that's best for them. The world has shrunk due to technology and leaving your home state isn't that big of a deal.

Some people just want a change of scenery and nothing wrong with that. I left my home state to attend A&M.

You can have "pride" and leave home.

There is nothing wrong with college station as a college town. You think there is more to do in Tuscaloosa or Clemson? It is about winning and relationships with coaches. That's it.
