Former Texas head coach Charlie Strong is the new head coach at South Florida. The news was first reported by ESPN's Chris Low and Sports Illustrated's Pete Thamel, who reports it's a 5-year deal.

Low reports Strong would like to bring most of his staff from Texas to USF, including offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert.

At USF, Strong inherits a program that is 10-2 this season and has won 17 of its last 21 games. The Bulls are the No. 2 rushing team in the country at 6.7 yards per carry. QB Quinton Flowers is one of the top QB's in the country, and he's a junior. There are only eight seniors in USF's offense/defense two-deep this year.

This will be Strong's fifth stint coaching in the Sunshine State. At Florida, Strong was a graduate assistant (1983-84), linebackers coach (1988-89), defensive line coach/assistant head coach (1991-94) and defensive coordinator/linebackers coach (2003-09). He also has been an assistant at Texas A&M, Southern Illinois, Ole Miss, Notre Dame and South Carolina.

I'm sure that this did not enter into the equation, but South Florida plays Texas in 2019 (moved to 2020), 2022 and 2024.
