I'm okay with admitting 80,000 if we set up some sort of freshman cage matches.

I don't know if 80,000 is good or bad. But the diversity thing is going to be rough.

Sharp sucks if he wants to water down the quality... it will degrade the value..

I just read how USless News and World Distort does their rankings and that is garbage in which leads to garbage rankings out.

The actual quality of the student is less than 10% of the ranking. A school is rewarded for handing out diplomas to everyone and penalized if it doesn't give everyone a diploma. And there is nothing in there about how employers rate the graduates and the money the graduates make. A big chunk of the rankings comes from high school counselors.

I don't believe that's completely accurate.

Still waiting on anyone who can provide documentation on the number of unqualified kids being admitted this past year or years???

If we are a degree mill then it should be easy to prove that we are admitting lots of unqualified kids. Either SAT scores or employer dissatisfaction with our graduates, something.

Way too many people spending money their "careers" can't pay. Does it make you feel smart to graduate with a degree in women's studies or English? If you don't use what you learned in college in your career then you didn't need to go to college.
This is bull****. "University" is about 2 things. Education and research. "A degree you can use in your career" is what ITT Tech, schools for mechanics, culinary institutes, and clown colleges give out. University is not a trade school and never was designed to be...until now I guess. We're on the cutting edge in that sense I guess.
Really? You want a med student that didn't learn about the body? You want an engineer that doesn't know E=MC2?

Spare me the well rounded liberal arts balance makes me a better person garbage.

Just chiming in to say....the business school started increasing their focus on writing intensive courses about a decade ago because they got too much feedback about how their graduates couldn't write a coherent sentence. Add in a number of graduates from STEM fields that can't get their point across if they aren't writing a formula, and you'll understand why you had to take all those pesky classes where they tried to get you to read a book and write a paper where you finally use the correct forms of "their" and "there". People that don't know how to write make everyone look bad when they get out of school and can't spell or use a comma, and improved writing and analysis skills are a fairly useful career tool.

That isn't an A&M specific problem, but you can't blame them for at least trying something to improve the situation.

A&M has fallen 20 spots in the U.S. News rankings in the last few years. It was in the high 40's and ranked ahead of UT in '98/'99. It's now ranked 68th.

What are the odds that Gov. Abbott will put his own guy in as chancellor? I think I read on here that Abbott has a much different view on higher education.

Is it me or has Sharp increased the role and visibility of the chancellor position? It my days at A&M I remember Dr. Gates communicating his vision for everything on the main campus. Dr. Loftin was huge in the move to the SEC. Now it seems Sharp is the spokesperson for A&M. I hate it.

25 x 25 initiative is sh*t. I can't wait to get into the working world, to find that an A&M engineering degree means nothing.
I've been in the working world longer than you've been on this rock. I'm here to tell you that my A&M engineering degree has opened a few doors for me...but my work ethic and attention to detail (both honed in aggieland) has been the key to finding a comfortable place in life for me and my family.

Your impediment in actuality might be sub-par critical thinking skills or lack of independent thought.

Given the USNR formula their rankings don't matter to me. Find a ranking that actually measures the output of a school

Mojave, get back to me in ten more years... And of course the point is metaphorical. I denigrated the value of the liberal arts just as much as any engineer. The point is that I outgrew it and know believe that knowledge needs to be pursued across a vast range.
I felt I was taught (most importantly) critical thinking skills along with "hard" skills related to a specific degree, as a result, as I grew older, I 'self-learned' along the road of life and didn't need the "30 year" things taught to me as a 20 year old. That knowledge came as result of self-motivation, knowledge seeking and desire for intellectual self-growth. Critical thinking was the key that opened the library door for life.

Where did you get this stat from? My son is a freshman at A&M. In his class, according to the admission department, only 300 students who were not automatic admits got into A&M. Texas has a much higher level of non-automatic admits by design. This is why they only accept the top 8%.
How could you possibly think that makes any logical sense. If somewhere around 30,000 students were admitted, you'd have to be on some dank weed to think that 99% of the people accepted were automatic admissions.
Edit: I'll even work out the math for you, since soon enough that piece of paper that says I'm a tamu engineering graduate will be better off used as fire starter: (30,000-300)/30,000 = .99 --> 99%
I know you wrote out your calculations, but its hard to take you seriously if you think 30,000 kids are admitted in a single class.

LOL......typical engineer. Educated beyond their intelligence.

I don't think the question is about today with 40 k undergrads, but what will happen when that number is increased to 65-70k in the next 10 years.

Aren't we talking about 55k undergrads, not 70k? If you asked back when I was in school when we had probably 20k undergrads and 7k graduates there would have been angst about 40k undergrads and 18 k graduates (today). Is A&M a worse school today then it was 1978-82?

Well 1300 seems like a decent test score. Maybe that was enough to overcome your HS rank? Have you found a good job? If so then maybe A&M was a good school for you.

According to the Houston chronicle last year, Texas A&M accepted 67% of their applicants. This was more than schools such as Sam Houston, sfa, Texas tech, tu, Baylor, Dallas baptist and so on. It is now easier to get into TAMU than Sam Houston? To me, that is embarrassing.

I DO NOT WANT MY DEGREE DEVALUED! BUT INCREASED ENROLLMENT OVER THE LAST 33 YEARS HAS NOT DEVALUED IT. SO I NEED TO UNDERSTAND WHY CONTINUED INCREASES AS LONG AS THEY ARE REASONABLE WILL DEVALUE MY DEGREE.

Acceptance rate tells us nothing without knowing the quality of applicants at each school. Also I read where the 67% included all A&M campuses not just CS.

Fair enough. However, they do "matter" to just about everyone that matters. Look, the USNWR rankings certainly aren't everything. However, they are not nothing either. Would a ranking of 99 bother you? 125? 250? Last? If they truly "don't matter" to you, then even ranking last wouldn't bother you a bit. It would me.

Given their inputs are almost complete garbage you shouldn't care. Just because the media touts them should make you realize they are worthless. 90% of Americans couldn't name the secretary of the treasury which is one of the most powerful people on the planet but half the people can probably give the first names of the Kardashain sisters. So I don't put stock in what the mob thinks.

There should be a ranking that actually measures the outputs of a school, you know like its graduates and how they do in the real world.

This. It may not matter to you, because you realize the flaws in the calculations, but it does matter to mom and dad, in the living room, trying to encourage their kid to go to the best school.

How bright is the kid and his or her parents if they can't figure out those rankings are garbage? Do you really want to admit kids that make decisions based upon garbage rankings? That aren't smart enough to figure out what is garbage and what isnt? Are you really worried about losing those kids to other schools?
