All jokes aside, this is awesome. Through and through.

Anyone notice anything odd about that paragraph? Sounds like an Aggie joke...

You mean about a vet becoming the team doctor? That did kind of stand out.

Bear Bryant probably said, "We need a doctor for all these jacka**es" so someone went and found a vet.

Howdy howdy,

My name is Harrison Allen, I'm the great grandson of R. H. "Chicken" Harrison, Jr.
I created an account because I want to clarify some things that the poorly written ESPN article left out or made vague.

My great grandfather was the first person to ever graduate from Texas A&M's vet school. He turned around and went to medical school a few years later so he was also an MD.

As a player he bet everyone on the team $1, including coaches, that he could drop-kick a 45 yard field goal on a wet and muddy field. When he made it
everyone turned around and ran off the field, they never paid him.
In 1917 he and his buddies stole the Rice Goat (Rice's mascot at the time) as a prank.

Also, he volunteered to be the team doctor and refused payment. When Coach Bear Bryant came to Texas A&M he found
out that Dr. Harrison was not being paid and forced him to accept a
paycheck even though my great grandfather protested.

Dr. Richard Henry (Chicken) Harrison, Jr was the quintessential Aggie. He
loved Texas A&M, Aggie football, and gave back to the university
that had given him so much.

Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed his story.

Harrison J. Allen, Jr. '11

P.S. I am a 5th generation Aggie. Dr. R. H. Harrison, Chicken's father, was class of 1891.
Thanks and Gig Em

He was the team doctor during the 1939 season when they won the national championship and was given a championship ring. The ring was passed down to my dad's first cousin, Dr. Sam Harrison, so it's still in the family.

During one of the games an Aggie player had one side of his nose ripped open. Doc Harrison stitched him up right there on the sideline after convincing him that he "might have to go back in." I wish I knew the name of that tough Ag but I was told his nose always looked a bit odd after that.

He did serve in both world wars. I simply do not know his exact dates of service so I am not sure if it caused him to miss the 1918 season or not but I am fairly certain that it did. The letter was sent to get him back on that winning team.

I have some pictures I could share if I was able to upload them straight from my computer instead of a web address.

I had to ask ESPN to go back and include that photo. I provided them with a ton of information and several more photos that they didn't use.

Don't tease us. You have to create an imgur or flicker account.

Grandson of Pinky Wilson (author of the war hymn) uploaded a ton of old pictures and is a legend for doing it.

I agree that the zoo is great, but your statement is pretty funny considering that the letter was posted on premium four days ago. Which I assume is where Sam Khan got wind of it.

Both threads are outstanding.
