I recently watched "The Endless Trench" on Netflix and it was both very intense and quite fascinating. Started reading more about this war and I think it may be one of the most underrated conflicts of the 20th century.

I think if the Republican side had the training, resources, and equipment to match their tenacity in combat, they would have likely won the war.

Check out "The Battle for Spain" by Anthony Beevor

Good option. Hugh Thomas is also a good read and beyond the general overviews of the war, George Orwell's Homage to Catalonia is a true classic.

As I am sure you know, Hemingway's novel For Whom the Bell Tolls is set during the Spanish Civil War.

It is an excellent book, well worth the time it takes to read.

One of the best things about the book is that Hemingway, who was deeply committed to the Republican cause, managed to write a fairly balanced account of the fighting.

He exposed the barbarity of both sides as well as the way the Republicans had been co-opted by Stalinists.

I read that book and marvel at Hemingway's ability to be so honest about something so dear to his heart.

I need to read these books. I've never been to Spain but it sounds like a pretty cool place.

Spain is a great country to visit. A lot of history that is quite separate and unique from the rest of Western Europe. Barcelona is outstanding. I don't remember much memorialization of the civil war, however. They're mostly interested in ripping down whatever Franco put up.

Definitely more to see there, though not in the most scenic parts of the country.

They're all cast out of a mold that prints 5'4" attractive women with long silky black hair.

I spent two non-consecutive weeks there in Madrid during the summer of 2019.

The things that surprised me were:
  • The lack of immigrants - Africans, Chinese, Indians - there just weren't any.
  • The lack of an underclass to do the menial tasks - it was Spanish women cleaning the hotel rooms.
  • Just how old it is. I went and toured an area where they had statues of Kings from 900 A.D.
  • The Spanish news media was obsessed with politics - local Spanish politics. In an era when the US media and others were obsessed with DT45, the Spaniards were too busy with their own problems to care about what the American President was doing.

Youtube has the BBC early 80s documentary about the Spanish Civil War (linked). Interviews with lots of the participants, including some high level ones. It's my favorite documentary. An even-handed look at the war.
