Far West - El Paso
Southern coast - Houston
(Last two run from Ok border to top of Southern Coast, but split down I-35 with major cities on I-35 having their existing political boundaries being the actual border)
Central Texas - Austin
East Texas - Dallas

Ft Worth and Dallas are now in different states.

Dallas and Houston are now in different states.

Well there's Ulrichia, it's a small plot of land near San Antonio. Then draw the rest of the lines however you like.

State capitals-

Pine curtain- nacogdoches
The metrosex- ftw
Central zone- waco
South texas- san Antonio
West texas- el paso
The handle- amarillo

I would try to group them in terms of how much the regions have in common and I can't imagine Brownsville having more in common with Beaumont than El Paso.

Texas should start negotiating with New Mexico to transfer El Paso to them and getting all of eastern NM in return. El Pas is culturally more similar to NM that it is to Texas, and eastern NM is called "Little Texas" in NM. Plus, Texas claimed eastern NM at one time, surrendering its claims in return for statehood, I think.
