Today marks the beginning of the High Holy Days of Texas History. The siege of the Alamo began 185 yrs ago on Feb 23rd with a sentry in the San Fernando Church tower spotting a flash in the distance. An approaching Mexican cavalry was confirmed by two Alamo scouts on horseback. The battle ended on Mar 6th with the death of most of the Alamo's inhabitants.

There probably wouldn't have been a Texas without an Alamo.

I'm not trying to step on toes, but I'll add a photo of the cathedral before the upgrade/expansion work was started.

Here's a pretty cool map of the siege using the modern streets and markers if anyone is interested.

You don't have a podcast, do you? Seems like there is a podcaster who uses that same phrase.

Agree with BQ78, thanks for posting. I love seeing historical sites in modern context.

You can't beat Henry Guerra's 13 Days of the Alamo series. I grew up on this in the 80s. Henry died around 2000.

Bruce is a good guy. He is an old Civil war reenactment buddy from the 80's.

185 years ago at this time, Mexican troops are laying on the ground in position for the final assault. Flints are tight in their muskets, bayonets sharp, all men wearing shoes or sandals, ladders are ready, and pickaxes and crowbars are being carried by some men. All are anxiously waiting for the signal to begin the assault.

Inside the Alamo the defenders have fallen into sleep after almost two weeks of constant harassment at night. Sentries are be in place in and outside the walls but sleep is overtaking them as well and Alamo Adjutant John Baugh is on duty and making the rounds inside the mission.

In 1836 the population of San Antonio was 2,100. Most residents lived on the west side of the San Antonio River. During that period, the Alamo and a smaller number of inhabitants were located on the east side in an area called Pueblo de Valero. George Nelson, author of Alamo: An Illustrated History, writes "the village had modest houses - jacales made of mud brick and straw. One early census counts 250 inhabitants, most men were farmers." During the Alamo siege, Nelson said, the defenders burned the jacales for a better line of fire.

Video posted on Jan 15, 2021 of the 1960 John Wayne Alamo movie set near Brackettville. Condition of the old movie set appears to be in bad shape.

One of the two scouts was Dr. Sutherland my great great great (?) grandfather and I have mentioned his written account here before. He ultimately went after Juan Seguin and missed the final battle. His nephew was killed in the Alamo. Look for The Fall of the Alamo by Dr John Sutherland. It is in A&M library. This is a must read to those interested in the Alamo and Texas history and has you can follow other suggested readings shown in those pages.

Few years back someone went into a church in Sutherland Springs Church near San Antonio and killed some folks. This town was founded by the doctor.
